2020 New Year's Ride- Atsion/Wharton State Forest

Post by BinDerSmokDat » Mon Dec 02, 2019 10:00 am

Is your New Year's resolution to ride more in the winter?
Do you resolve to get your rig dirtier in 2020 than 2019?
Have you been putting off your first real off-road excursion?
Out with those old lazy riding habits and in with the new!
Kick off 2020 right by partaking in the Nation's earliest off-roading event of the year!

Where
Wharton State Forest
Meet at the Atsion Ranger Station.

When
Saturday, January 4th.
Leave 10:00am from the Atsion Ranger office parking area.
If you need to unload a bike or sort out your gear, get there earlier.

What
A day ride through Wharton State Forest and surrounding environs.
Lunch is your sandwich, snacks and drinks you bring with you on the trail.
Mighty Joe's has gas and a deli, with good sandwiches.
You can grab fuel AND food there before you meet at the Rangers Station.
Bring food! It can get chilly at times and a good meal will help you stay warm.

Riding
All skill levels/rigs welcome.
A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two wheelers along.

All vehicles must be street legal. If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a dual sport bike that's OK; he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and some water crossings.
If someone gets stuck, we all help push/pull each other out.
Either 1wd or 2wd will be fine.
A knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required.
We've literally had a Retro with a street tire do the ride before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading.
This area is very Ural friendly.
Trails are just wide enough to make it seem adventurous.
The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off camber. If that sounds boring just pick up the speed a bit or skip the chicken bypasses navigate one of the deep holes.

This is a "rain, snow or shine" ride, so dress appropriately.
Wear layers, including a windproof layer.
Nylon windbreakers and jogging pants in your layers will keep you warmer than thicker gear, as they stop the wind.
Monkeys should dress for snowmobiling, they are less active than riders and they can get cold in that metal tub.
Warm gloves, wool socks and waterproof boots go a long way in keeping riders and monkeys warm.
Spare layers, socks and gloves are a good idea if it is wet/extra cold.

Please come with most of a tank of gas, willingness to get your bike dirty, and pack a lunch, snacks and drinks, as we'll be in the woods for several hours.

Gas
Gas up before you get to the Ranger Station, we hit the woods at 10am sharp-ish.

Mighty Joe's Gas Grill & Deli/ATM
1231 U.S. 206, Shamong, NJ

Gulf
90 N White Horse Pike, Hammonton, NJ

PM or post of you have questions.

Hope to see you there!

Dress warm, brings lots of layers and pray for snow! :naughty:

I got the Ural out today for the first decent ride since our Thanksgiving outing...

I'm only a few gallons of gas away from being ready for New Years :)

New Years Ride, Spring or Fall Jersey Devil Hunt or Left Over Turkey Ride , what ever you choose to attend, I guarantee that you will enjoy yourself ! And you will have sand in places you never imagined !!! I've only attended one Fall JDH but it was noteworthy . I'm the guy with "the retro" . I was surprised how well the bike performed in the sugar sand and water crossings. And when I did get stuck (once) ,everyone was right there ,push/pull ing me out. This is a great group of guys, welcoming and willing to share their knowledge and love of these rigs. I'll get to another JDH , but it will be to hang out by the fire , not to join the hunt unless I put "the retro" (2002 BC ) back on the road. My 2013 Retro is too pretty to take into the pines ... "sand in places you never imagined ". Merry Christmas Rich, Dave and all Soviet Steeds of The Eastern Front ! BK

61 degrees and raining... I'm in! Like were not going to get wet in the first place, haha.
I'll put a double-coat of RainX on the cameras.

See ya's at the Ranger Station Saturday morning.

You can't take those multiple day forecasts to seriously.
Already that has changed to a high of 51F.
Hoping that cold high pressure front pushes out the rain so Saturday is just "cloudy."

See told you the weather would change!
Now it's back up to a high of 57F and the rain has been downgraded to "a few showers" stopping at 10am.

STOP looking at those forecasts before The Jersey Devil himself changes the winds.
Loading-up this morning, lite drizzle.

I remembered that my spare tire nut is stripped and I have a broken turn signal.
I have more work to do than I thought before I can load up.

So I got all my tinkering done, started the bike aaaaaand remembered I blew out an exhaust gasket last ride. So the Y-pipe and skidplate had to come off and two hours later I'm good to go!
I should get there by 9:30am if not earlier.
