Hard starting '14.

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.
Forum rules
Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Update: I have now managed to kickstart, cold, in 15 degree weather, on the fourth kick, after the application of starter fluid into the air box.

Not just repaint -- completely strip and repaint. Which is probably going to be a lot more expensive than sourcing used bodywork as things rot.

I'm not saying it will be cheap or easy, but there ARE solutions that will all but guarantee you won't have the same thing happen again.

Final update on the hard starting saga. This morning, it is 12oF, and the motor is stone cold, hasn't been run in over 14 hours. A spray and four or five kicks and it comes to life. Almost as easily as the 650.

To me, this means the starter can once again become a totally obsolete accessory despite the fuel injection, resolving my most significant objection to my '14. While I do want this trick to work without a spray can, had we come up with this prior to my futzing around with Taiwanese starters and car batteries, I probably would have skipped all that.

Thank you everyone for helping me wrack my brains on this one, and to Chad in particular for his "simplified starter fluid tek." It's nice to feel reassured that there is always a rational explanation for everything, even when there's a damned computer (or two) in the middle of the thing :)

Bah! I think someone else suggested trying the starting fluid. I just found an easy way to squirt it into the airbox. :cheers:

Yes, thanks also to Barry for pioneering the technique :) it takes a village, and I’m happy to be the idiot of this one.

I do still wonder what it is that makes some FI Urals more cold-blooded than others.

By the way, I did discover today that it is easy to overdo it with the starter fluid, in which case you will need to rev it a little bit to clear it out or it will run like garbage and possibly foul the plugs. A quick, split-second spray is all that you need.

Starting fluid and fuel in the intake for cold weather starting has been around a lot longer than I have, I'm just another one of the idiots to forget the simplest solution, and over think it......... :foilhead:
