The Red Menace Lives! (father-son moped project)

Post by rebelrider » Thu Mar 10, 2016 10:28 pm

For folks who enjoyed my last moped project (http://sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtopi ... ed#p375784) Here is one I'm doing with my son. This will be his moped when its done.

I could have swore I started a topic about this, but I can't find it anywhere, so I'll start from the beginning.
So it began with a never used, NOS frame that is probably 35+ years old now, that I gave my boy for Christmas a couple years ago.
I don't think he new what to make of it at first.

Next we found an old engine, carb, and wheels on eBay.

Cylinder is so small, I had to get a brake cylinder tool to hone it!
It got 90 psi compression before, and with honing and new rings, it now has 125 psi. :D

In addition to cleaning and repacking the axles and free wheel cartridge, my neighbor (a bicycle enthusiast) was kind enough to true and adjust the spokes for us. We also did some body assembly, and some temporary wiring to get the plug to spark.

Well, that brings us up to date. After some troubleshooting around the electrical (I missed a ground, and discovered that its all AC) We finally got to test the engine!

Just as a side note, I wonder when I started moving around like my grandfather?

The Red Menace has had to take a back seat for a couple years, but we're back at it!
Today we got some more wiring done, as well as the seat and cargo rack. It's far enough along that my boy (who is now 18 when did that happen?!) road it up and down the driveway a couple times. Still some more details to work out, before it's roadworthy, but it's finally looking like a complete bike.
