Plugging Bar Ends

Post by cookiemech » Sun May 17, 2020 5:47 pm

This is stupid. I probably can't see the forest for the trees . . .

In cold weather, I install the metal fairing, leg guards, and Barkbuster hand guards:

https://barkbusters.net/products/storm/3475-stm-005-bk/

But now it's warm. I've removed all of that, and I'm left with holes in the ends of my handlebars. It's not aesthetics (I have Harleys for that affliction); I don't like places where unwanted stuff could enter, like water, for example. So what is a straightforward way to plug those holes? The obvious is a set of bar end plugs (and Amazon has an astonishing variety), but virtually all of them involve rubber plugs that are expanded by use of a bolt from the end. My experience is that once installed, these are virtually impossible to remove, and of course I need to do that annually.

What would be nice is to have some bar end plugs designed like the ones on the Barkbuster hand guards, which use aluminum inserts that are expanded by the end screw pulling a conical wedge. Those are easily removed. Or maybe even just a couple of snug-fitting plastic caps or plugs (need to not jam the throttle, obviously).

Don't know if diameters will work. 😃

Why not just get some bar end weights?

These look as though they use rubber plugs inside the bars. That's what I'm trying to avoid, since the ones like that are difficult (in my experience) to remove from the bars, which I'd need to do annually.

Sure, if you have a suggestion of some that don't use the rubber plugs that expand inside the bars . . .

Why do you remove the hand guards anyway?
If You do any kind of off road riding and possibly even on road, there will come a day when you’ll be either glad you left them on, or sorry that you took them off. That little bar doesn’t block much wind in the summer. I leave mine on all year for impact protection, I install “Elephant Ears” over the hand guard in the winter for wind protection.
It took me nearly losing a finger in the woods to pull the hand guards down off the nail they were hanging on and put them on the bike, but I’m a little slow.
That’s my two cents.

No, I really don't ride off road at all. The hand guards I have wouldn't provide much protection anyway, as they are only one-point mounts. I like as much breeze as I can get when it's warm, as I'm covered head to toe in some sort of gear.

Of course it is your rig and your fingers, so you should do what you want, just putting my two cents in :D
I just looked at your profile, I see you’re in Eastern PA, not too far from me. There are a lot of riders in our area, you must know some of them. Even though you don’t ride off road, you might enjoy coming out to one of the “organized” rides such as the Jersey Devil Hunt. Plenty of pavement, easy sand roads, and things to do if you don’t want to go deep.
Keep an eye on the upcoming rides and rallies section. Hope to see you around

Au contraire. I live near West Newton, which is about 25 miles southeast of Pittsburgh . . . not close at all!

HA! that’s funny!
My only excuse is that I was using a pair of scratched up cheaters when I read that.
You’re still welcome down here anyway, just bring your passport :D
