Does a listing of Ural owners exist?

Post by Ironhand » Mon Jul 15, 2019 1:34 pm

I was on a charity ride this weekend and ran into a couple who had just purchased a 2018 CT from Ural NE after the original owner put 100km or so, had some sort of minor issue, so sold it back. Neither of these nice folks had much wrenching expertise but were clearly already in love with their rig. We got talking about the brand, sparse dealer network, and the occasional mechanical "character flaws" many of us deal with as owners. He mentioned that when he bought his BMW GS, he was given a booklet of BMW owners across the US detailing what sort of mechanical assistance they were able to offer a fellow owner in need. How nice would this be for Ural owners, especially for folks without a bunch of mechanical knowledge?

Assuming that something like this doesn't already exist, I am wondering how we would do so.

There used to be a list called "Red Riders Resources". I'm not sure if anyone is still keeping it updated or not. Try searching it here.

I think it was called the Black Book.

It was not a list of BMW owners, it was a list of owners who were willing to assist those who had issues.

It would be more worth to Ural owners in my view, BMW tended to upper scale, Ural owners not as much and fewer ports in the storm.

ADV Rider, and to a smaller (but still admirable) degree this site, serves as good a registry of brand- and model-specific owners as we might want.

I've offered assistance to others, and have received it myself, and always in a timely manner, through the simple action of a post and/or a private message. That's the appeal of web forums. That's their dynamism at work.

I wouldn't trade the speed and efficiency of the foregoing method for a static, expiring hardcopy document.

It is the "Anonymous Book" that is published by the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America Club; it's included in the membership fee.

BMWMOA has over 35,000 members to help defray the cost.

Not Ural-specific, but members of the United Sidecar Association receive a paper copy of a book that is similar to the BMW Owner's Anonymous. I would guess that sidecar owners either have a Ural or know something about them. Maybe.

HIPA laws prevent such a list of Ural owners due to the mental illness connection.

I'd say this forum is probably the best source since you have both riders and dealers here. Granted you need to sort out the bad info from the good. But once you figure out who the right members are for tech support, you are in pretty good shape. I'd also suggest you enter the phone numbers of your local dealer, Terry Crawford, Heindle and Holopaw in your phone.

Great advice.
