Ideas on scored pushrod?

Post by GHGoodwin » Wed Apr 25, 2018 12:02 pm

I found this inside my left jug on an engine I'm mothballing. Exhaust valve pushrod.

Damage seems to correspond to this area on jug.

Engine is a salvage I purchased from Crawford. I'm assuming the accident jumped the pushrod off the rocker arm adjuster and it banged around a bit. Pushrod is still straight, lifter seems fine, rocker arm assembly looks fine also. Any other ideas on what happened?

I think that's normal Hal. My understanding is that it's from the head gasket.

If Ural head gasket is like BMW gaskets they can go on two ways. But one way the gasket will touch the push rod and make those marks

There's a shy 1/32" diameter reduction along the center of the marking. All others are fine.
THNX chaos. Read through the thread. Still shoulden't happen.

Stock pushrods are flexing under load, some more than others. I installed a set of Modtop pushrods which are stiffer & have a much better end finish. No more flexing, getting full valve lift at all RPM's now & no sign of contact with the gasket any more. :)

The older style puyshrods were hollow and had pressed-on endcaps that went over the tube. These flexed a good bit and the caps had a tendency to drift off their seating. They could magically change length.

The newer ones are solid, have a machined end with a champfered edge, and a more robust endcap. There is a "thin" section exposed between the end of the champfer and the base of the cap. Essentially a potential weak spot. These flex less than the old style.

The Modtops are solid with a pressed in endcap that has full contact with the rod section. Less flex and no thin spots. Just a better overall product.

I wonder if that by design or mistake?
