what to set the valve thingies?

Post by hotflash44 » Sun Apr 02, 2017 5:40 pm

Okay Guys, Tomorrow I am going to do the 1000km valve adjustment. I have read and looked at lots of videos/articles on the subject, and think I totally understand. Its been years since I have done a valve adjustment last time on a Triumph Cub. Noticed in my search for enlightenment that the Ural valve setting is .002 to .004 thousands. I would really like to quiet them down, tappets can be quite clicky on the Ural . Mine is a 2016 gu. Im going to do a look see basically, if they are in specks I will leave them alone. Also im going to check the head bolts, going to use the see if they are loose style or maybe the pull them down to required torque 36.9 or less for my 2016. Im going to avoid the back them off 1/4 turn and re- torque style. not completely sold on that method. Any advice would be nice thanks!

Many say "loose valves are happy valves. .004 seems to be the number.

I'm not too sure about the back it off 1/4 turn either, also never heard of it before and it's not in any of my workshop manuals.

Re the clearances I agree, in fact .004 seems a bit tight to me, but I'm guessing this is due to new regulations about reducing mechanical noise. Personally I might think about trying .006, or at least for the exhausts.

At risk of stating the bleedin' obvious, but retorquing the head nuts will of course require valve clearances to be reset anyway.

Mr.Wazzock, your right about the re-torquing. I forgot that if i touch the bolts that will produce a need to set the valves automatically . so i am on a look and see adventure here as the bike has 1000km. so before messing with the bolts its time to check the clearances.if they need adjusting than do the bolt re-torque. the tappets are a little clicky now but only at low idle. Give a little gas and they quiet down. I really don't expect I will need a valve adjustment ,but who knows. Might just very lightly feel the bolts just make sure there not loose. Its weird to be working on a machine so new, its like the old days all over again. Do you remember the old up right VW had a problem with valves going tight instead of loose, so recommended every 1600 miles a valve adjust. VW mechanics loved the built in issue a real money maker because no one did the adjustments, strange the VW survived.

I use a tight .005, just barely able to pull feeler gauge out.
Seems OK.

Just set mine at .004 for its first service as well.

It's simple to do.

Each engine is different, with it's own quirks. I would suggest setting somewhere between a loose .003 to a tight.005. Your motor will tell you when it's happy. It'll take some trial, and error, but with experience you'll learn your bike's individual needs.

unless you are begging for a stripped cylinder stud, for get the back off 1/4 turn and then retighten. tight is tight. do not follow the torque settings in your manual either. set your torque wrench for around 22-25 pds and check the bolts using the cross method. follow Billy G's web site myural.com and you cannot go wrong. .0004 to .0005 is fine for valves. remember we are talking metric not standard.

type-O, .0004 is std inch in ten thousands, .004 is std inch in thousands, this is what i think the max Ural valve setting is in the manual. now that can be converted to mm if you have mm feelers. .010 is mm for .004 std inch. let me know if im crazy don't think so.

You're right, .01 is mm, and .004 is in.
