Sidecar driveshaft loose?

Post by epix » Wed Aug 10, 2016 2:27 pm

Today while pulling in the parking lot at work traveling 10mph or so I could hear my driveshaft axle rattle around a bit on my 2011 Gear-Up.

I was in 1WD (rarely use the 2WD) when I heard the noise.. when I parked I grabbed the axle near the u-joint where it connects at the final drive and it would wiggle an half-inch or so in an up/down motion.. is that normal or should it be tight?

Bike seems to feel fine when cruising on the road, just odd this is the 1st time I've noticed the rattle. When going down the road in 1WD mode the driveshaft axle appears to be rotating in a smooth motion.

Need a little clarity as your axle and drive shaft are two very different things and I am having a hard time picturing what you mean. Your axle, the steel rod that goes through each wheel, should not have any play. The stub axle on the hack wheel may rotate some, but that is an indication of worn splines.

Your drive-shafts may have some play due to the u-joints, but they shouldn't "rattle" either.

There shouldn't be any excessive play in the u-joints, driveshafts, etc. Small amounts of play in the donut or spline connections is OK but otherwise everything else should be reasonably tight. U-joints should have very little axial or radial play. The play between the pinion and ring gear should only be a couple of degrees. Nothing in the drivetrain should have a 1/2" of play, something is worn out or broken. :?

Bad wording.. the shaft I'm speaking of is what I call the 2wd drive shaft.. has the accordion boots on each end and connects from the final drive out to the sidecar wheel.

I'll take a short video tonight of the shaft play.

The slip yoke on 2wd drive line is pretty sloppy on the ones I have seen.

Uploaded the video. Shook the driveshaft at a few diffent places.. seems pretty secure at the u-joint itself. Moves a little bit right at the final drive just forward and back (seems normal), and the shaft itself is does move around a bit but it does make a bit of sense as it would need to do so when riding in rough terrain.

Looks like the u joint on the side car wheel end is bad.

Just checked the U-Joint on the sidecar tire side.. it's quite solid. The pusher side does have a bit of play to it.

I removed the rubber accordion boot and scraped away at the grease which was pretty dry (almost mud like) The splines on the "male" portion seem all intact, but "female" portion feels a bit loose (similar to an ex-gf  ) Anyways, how tight should the spline junction be?

Way too much play on the splines.

Sidecar driveshaft isn't cheap.....:lurker:

If your not going to run in 2wd, you can remove the driveshaft at each u-joint and run with out it until you get a replacement.

Your video led to this one (and several with babes in bikinis). This looks like an exposed view of your problem. But your video looked like there was some play in the drive side universal also. The universal should be free of visible play.

I am no expert in this all but to me it seems that the sidecar frame is setup to far away from the FD allowing the shaft to be over extended. There should only be about 2" of splines exposed under the boot. :?
