After closer inspection, and consultation with Dad and the dealer, I don’t think the bearing spun in the holder after all. It looks like the holder just has some fairly coarse machining marks. There’s no galling at all, and as I mentioned - you can’t really feel the striations much on the holder, and not at all on the bearing race. The surface of the holder where the bearing sits feels exactly the same as the machining marks in the recessed section (oil drain?). There’s no flat spots or resistance at all when spinning the bearing, so I guess there’d be no reason for it to have spun in the holder. I just over-reacted when I saw the marks. Dealer suggested I apply some green Loctite when I reassemble it.

Re: 2020 GU - Engine Noise - Success!!

I received my new parts this morning and got to work! Once I had the crank in, flywheel on, and timing gear mounted, I checked runout on the face of the timing gear. I made sure I had my dial indicator well mounted, and where the runout was 0.018” before, it is now 0.0005”! I’m kind of guessing at the final digit, but it’s certainly less than one thousandths! And no more tapping sound when I move the gears through TDC. I’ll get the clutch back together tonight, and then tomorrow pistons and cylinders and maybe by tomorrow evening I can get some help to get it mounted back in the bike. I can’t wait to hear it run!!!

Bet you'll be surprised by the increase in power band. I'm accelerating up hills in 4th that required 3rd before the crank swap.

Really? Simply due the loss in efficiency caused by the bent crank? That would be a great side benefit, but honestly as long as the irritating tapping/clacking sound is gone I’ll be happy :D . I’m hoping to get the engine back in tonight, and then have it running tomorrow if nothing comes up.

Can't explain the difference, interested to see if you get similar results. Maybe pistons seeing a different timing due to twist in crank?
MIne, when warm would clatter like a poorly maintained diesel with 200k miles on it at shut down.

It lives!! Got everything buttoned up today and fired it up tonight after dinner. Lo and behold it sounds like a Ural!! The clatter is a thing of the past! Hopefully tomorrow or Saturday I’ll find some time to take it for a bit of a ride. I’ll also see if I can put together a before and after video comparing the sounds sometime over the next few days. Thanks again everyone for the assistance and feedback! Very much appreciated!

Just read this whole thread again. Looks like my original diagnosis was correct. In my view this kind of stuff is completely unacceptable on a 2020 motorcycle with such low mileage on it, Ural or not. Basically a time bomb put in at the factory. Sorry you had to spend time and money on this.

Yeah, not impressive, that’s for sure. Now, given I bought the bike used there’s no way I can be sure there wasn’t some user inflicted cause earlier in its life, but still…

It’s still amazing to me how the sound seemed to migrate totally up to the alternator gear area. Even when I had the front open and turning the crank by hand it still sounded like it was coming from high up on the motor.

Fingers crossed this crank lasts a while!!

Took me a little while, but I finally got around to doing a before and after video of the idle sound of my 2020. Now, to be fair, I don't have the camera phone in exactly the same position, and the after part is with the OEM exhaust instead of the 2 into 1, but you can still hear the improvement:
