I know there were several auctions years ago for bits and pieces of the Littlefield collection. Sounds like someone got into an uninformed bidding war, might have had their mind confused with the tanks and other much bigger ticket items.

If only it was the price of the initial posting....

There was an attempt to install a 2wd on M72 however it never went to full production. It was called ... M73 of course!

I was fortunate to visit Littlefields Ponytracks ranch a couple of times and really enjoyed it. I was a USMC tanker in the early 60's and at the last visit at the ranch , when we came to the M48 my wife mentioned that it was the tank I served in. The guide said "would you like to jump up there and look around ? At that time I was in my early 70's . I looked at the little Joe exhaust and thought "hey, why not." I grabbed the exhaust pipe and jumped up on the sponson box and up into the TC hatch. I guess the guide didn't expect me to be able to get up there( visitors cannot go on the vehicles). But I was up in my old familiar office as a Tank Commander. I wanted to do the firing drill---gunner---truck---1700---fire--the loader loads the HE round and says "UP" which means the round is in the chamber and the breach block is up and ready to fire. The computer calculates the super elevation and the gunner acquires the target on his array or the telescope. The gunner says "ON THE WAY" pulls the trigger and you feel the round go down range and hear the concentric hydro recoil spring mechanism do it's thing. So it is more like a loud pop and then the mechanical actions of the gun recoil and return to battery. Well I didn't say all that but sitting there was, for me, the highlight of the visit. I have read the Marine Corps is going to disband it's tank battalions. It is going to get rid of the tanks. The Abrams tanks and the M48 series is like the difference between an P51 and an F22. As the world continues on its journey the rapidly increasing changes can be overwhelming. The one military constant is -- the grunt on the ground--the trigger puller--is the one that guarantees our freedom

The tank Battalions when I served had the M60A1
Each Tank Battalion had a TOW Company.
Was taught when I was in that the strength of the Marine Corps. was based on not having to always rely on the other branches for tank support, air support, ect. and that is what really made for a cohesive operational envronment when deploying...

But Fellas, it has all of the spokes and none are broken! You know you are grasping when that is a selling point. Also just dawned on me that there must have been several ummmm... intellectually challenged folks at the original auction for the bid to get that high. People do lose their minds at auctions though.

If you have ever owned a dnepr, then you KNOW that NO broken spokes IS a selling point! LOL. Back in the 90s when I had my 90's MT16, I was constantly tightening up the spokes as they stretched to prevent breakage!
