Turkey Leftovers Ride aka Black Saturday NJ Pines

Post by BinDerSmokDat » Mon Oct 28, 2019 1:41 pm

It's that time of year again :boogie:

Where
Not Yasgur's farm, Not Old McDonald's farm, but JayBird's farm!
Use 1550 W Bay Ave Barnegat Township, New Jersey for GPS directions.

When
11/30/19 10:00am
Ride starts at Jay's farm.
The goal is to get back by sundown.
We almost always make it, with time to spare.
Jay is going to have a bonfire after to hangout and socialize.

What
A day ride through Forked River Mountain, Penn, Bass River and Byrne areas and points in-between.
Lunch is your turkey leftovers, snacks and drinks you bring with you on the trail.
Bring food and drinks! It can get chilly at times and a good meal will help you stay warm.

Riding
A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two wheelers along before.
All vehicles must be street legal. If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a dual sport bike that's OK; he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and some water crossings.
If you get stuck there will be enough of us around to push/pull you out.
1wd or 2wd will be fine and a willingness to push a stuck bike would be nice.
Knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required. We've had a Retro with a street tire do the ride before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading. This area is very Ural friendly.
Trails are just wide enough to make it seem adventurous. The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off camber. If that sounds boring just pick up the speed a bit or skip the chicken bypasses and try to navigate a deep hole.

This is a rain, snow or shine ride, so dress appropriately.
Wear layers, including a windproof layer.
Nylon windbreakers and jogging pants in your layers will keep you warmer than thicker gear as they stop the wind.
Monkeys should dress for snowmobiling, they are less active than riders and they can get cold in that metal tub.
Warm gloves, wool socks and water proof boots go a long way to keeping riders and monkeys warm.
Spare layers, socks and gloves are a good idea if it is wet/extra cold.

General NJ Park information...

https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandfor ... index.html

Gas
Gas up before you get to the farm, we hit the woods at 10am sharp-ish.
We will not be getting gas before heading into the woods.
Google gas that is close for you, if you are coming from the West, the last gas is at the Rt. 70/72 circle.
If you are getting off the Parkway there should be gas near one of your exits.

Please note that Jay's farm is a working farm, so when you arrive, pull up, un-loop the chain on the gate, drive through and then CLOSE THE GATE and loop chain around gate again.
Need to keep out the critters that don't belong...four-legged and two legged.
Follow that sandy road and you'll find the gang.
We try to head out by 10am, but you can get there a little earlier to unload, BS, check out Jay's collection of treasures.

PM JayBird or me if you want to swap cell numbers.
Post here if you have questions.

Hope to see you there!

I should be there on probably 2, not 3 wheels. Annual Gray Saturday Ride the same day (as opposed to Black Friday) with some of my Dual Sport nut job buddies.

We start a bit earlier than you guys but I'll check in with Jay to see if we can drop bikes and trailers at his farm. Otherwise we usually congregate at the Ranger Station. I believe you guys rode late into the dark last year and might have seen a drop or two of rain?

You can come to the farm early, just text or call to let me know about what time you’ll arrive.

So, I should be seeing you guys at some point on Saturday. Either at Jay's Farm early or somewhere on the trails/roads.
I have unfortunately not been able to start my XR250 yet. It has not run since Sept. 8 when I rode the Pines (and crashed too) last and I think the carb is gacked-up. Too busy at work and just no time in between. Why I have been shedding & selling some of my bikes, just not good to not start and actually ride them.

I'm going to work on it tonite and Friday when I'm off from work. Alternatives are riding the TW200 or the stodgy BW200 which I was going to bring anyway. I have so much stuff un-done electrically on the Patrol due to another project that changing from Dual Sport riding to 3 wheels is not an option.

Looks like me and probably 2 other riders (Chris & Scotty) that y'all have met before.
Scotty just did 127 miles in the woods yesterday during that 62 degree weather. Said the woods are VERY DRY. Of course that means we'll get wet but maybe not underwater wet, Ha.

I'll see if they want to start at Jay's or the Atsion Ranger Station as usual. If it's the latter I'm still going to come by for the bonfire afterwords.
Jay, I'll call you later today.

Dave... I got an interesting comment on the 2019 New Years Ural ride youtube video from someone that knows you. Said I'd pass it on so here it is:

"Highlighted comment from:

Hey, that's Dave Bennett. I worked for Dave 25yrs ago at Precision. Hi Dave, it's Jeff Thomas, hope you and the Mrs are doing well.
Finally got my Harley after raising four boys...:)
I dig the Ural and its utilitarianism. Looks like you guys have a blast."

If you want to respond to him but don't have his contact stuff just go here (below). Sounds like he could be a prospective convert riding monkey, HaHa:

I think we are planning to ride in the Forked River Mountains area and into Brendan Byrne SF, don’t know if we’ll get down by Atsion, but hey, you never know.
Your buddies are welcome to launch from my yard, there’s plenty of parking and it’s gated.
Text or PM me for the address if you don’t already have it.

I got my GearUp back running today for the ride.
I had to put piston rings in the right cylinder, I ran it smoking on that side so long it finally got to the point a new plug would foul out in about a minute and it was pumping raw oil out the exhaust.
I really thought it had a broken ring but everything looked good, I honed the cylinder a couple of licks and put some used rings in it.
It’s back to starting on one kick and running good, I’m ready to ride!

Ah, that's excellent to hear.
Now how are you going to know if there is oil in your engine going forward if it's not smoking anymore?
Ha, your words not mine :)

I think we are leaning on starting from your place after breakfast at Lucille's. So see you Sat. morning.
Happy Turkey Day too.

I checked fluids, topped off gas and grabbed some extra cold weather gear.
Bike is on the trailer.

See you around 9ish.

Hoping to be at Jay's by 8:00 - 8:30am, drop bikes and head to Lucille's for breakfast.
Did some riding today, pretty cold. Hoping tomorrow in the woods will be warmer.

I couldn't start my XR so it'll be an all Yamaha day. Should be interesting

It's going to be a nippy 34F at 9am, going to warm up to a balmy 43F high by 3pm.
It feels warmer riding in the woods, less wind chill because you are riding slower than street speeds and working harder.

See you there!

The Farm address is 1519 West Bay Ave. Barnegat NJ 08005, not 1550 as stated in the first post.
I’m looking forward seeing you guys and doing some riding tomorrow 😁😁😁

Ugh. Just discovered this thread, and it's a gig I could have attended (had I read it when first posted, and put plans in place).

Maybe next time.

Enjoy!

Heads up for next year then, it's an annual tradition. Here's the oldest thread O could find on this site. https://sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtop ... f=3&t=5224

Another annual day trip is the first Saturday of the new year....stay tuned.
