Fall Jersey Devil Hunt 9/28-9/30 2018

Post by ReCycled » Wed Aug 08, 2018 4:34 pm

The 2018 Fall Jersey Devil Hunt will be at the state run Atsion Campground Shamong, NJ located within the 115,000 acre Wharton State Forest.
What can you expect? To get your bike dirty and have some fun.
What do you need? A motorcycle and a tent. A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two wheelers along before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading. This area is very Ural friendly.
Trails are just wide enough to make it seem adventurous. The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off camber. If that sounds boring just pick up the speed a bit or try to navigate an otherwise "deadend."

Our "camping" is usually limited to campfire activities as we patronize local establishments for most of our meals.
Flush toilets and hot showers in a reasonably kept state facility.
The nearest hotel for those that don't "do" camping is the Econo Lodge in Hammonton, about 10 mins away.

Thursday night- 1-2 folks get there and hang out, but not always.
Friday- Most folks arrive at some point in the day. Setting up camp, short trail rides, occasionally stopping back at camp to pick up new arrivals. Dinner at a local restaurant, relax around campfire.
Saturday- Breakfast at the famous "Nina's/Not Nina's/Outpost/Fork and Spoon Cafe" or whatever it is currently called, around 9ish, rally point at Ranger's Station 10ish, ride until afternoon-ish, back to camp to shower, Dinner at a local restaurant, sit around campfire soothing aching muscles, telling lies, exaggerating our off-road prowess, making memories.
Sunday- Folks start to break camp, head out/Breakfast at the famous "Nina's/Not Nina's/Outpost/Fork and Spoon Cafe" or whatever it is currently called, occasionally a morning dirt ride, but no guarantees.

Riding
All vehicles must be street legal. If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a dual sport bike that's OK; he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and some water crossings.
If you get stuck there will be enough of us around to push/pull you out.
1wd or 2wd will be fine; a knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required.
We've had a Retro with a street tire do the ride before.
Most trips it is 97% riding, 3% stucks/pushing bikes, but we are taking a lot more pictures when there is a stuck so the photos make it look more challenging.

Meals
We have coffee in the campground.
A hearty breakfast is served at the famous "Nina's/Not Nina's/Outpost/Fork and Spoon Cafe" or whatever it is currently called, GPS address 750 U.S. 206 Hammonton, NJ 08037
We don't leave the trail for lunch so bring a sandwich or snacks
We head back to camp to clean up and then hit dinner at a local diner or other establishment.
Evenings we relax around the campfire, bring your marshmallows and Jiffy Pop.

Camping
GPS Address for Campsite 903 Atsion Rd, Shamong, NJ 08088
GPS Address for Ranger Station 744 U.S. 206 Shamong, NJ 08088

We generally reserve sites 13 and 24 for the big campfire.
If you want to be near the group, get sites 14,15, 23, 25 or closest available; some may already be reserved by the regulars.

Hotel
Econo Lodge
308 S White Horse Pike, Hammonton, NJ
Never stayed there, just throwing it out as the closest option for those who don't camp.

Gas
Mighty Joe's Gas Grill & Deli/ATM
1231 U.S. 206, Shamong, NJ

Gulf
90 N White Horse Pike, Hammonton, NJ

Hope to see you there.
If you have any questions, ask away or PM.

OK, I'll add it to the calendar. I guess I should start putting my bike back together, eh?

I'm booked in campsite #13 Thursday Night to Sunday morning.
I plan on arriving Thursday night around 5-6pm.

Some of the links above in ReCycled's original post no longer work because the reservation system has changed. See the links below.

Click here for a link to the campsite map...

ReCycled or one of the other regulars usually grabs #24 so we have big adjoining sites for the campfire and hanging around.
If you reserve a site, get #25, 23, 14 or 15 if you want to be near group.

Click for reservation website...

You want to select WHARTON STATE FOREST, the dates you will be staying and then scroll up to the upper right corner on the ATSION FAMILY CAMP map and click a site to reserve. You don't need to reserve a site, there are usually sites open and you can select one when you arrive.

Some folks arriving late on Friday have picked a site and registered at the office first thing Saturday morning.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

See you there!

It was finding the local gang of Uralistas and participating in the JDH that have made my Ural ownership the awesome experience it has been!

Ok. She’s all back together. The starter that I fried in the water holes last May was replaced with a fancy new one courtesy of Terry Crawford. I cleaned out the air box and changed the fluids. And then I noticed that the brake pads on the front were toast. So I replaced those too.

She’s good-to-go! Hopefully I can get the time off.

You've got plenty of time to get it running right, but even if it doesn't run, bring it down anyway, I/we'll help you get it running.
I don't recall a non/poorly running rig ever stopping Kenny from coming out, in fact, I don't think he even tries to start his before he leaves.
If it's running poorly, first things I do is; drain the carburetor bowls, check/clean the air filter, check/clean the plugs, also feel the exhaust to see if it's hitting on both cylinders (Stand behind the motorcycle and put your hands about 2-3" away from the exhaust outlets, feel for roughly equal heat and pressure. If one is pumping cold air, you have a dead cylinder.)
Let us know how it's going.

My first thought was of Kenny, too :-P

Did it start acting funny while riding? Or maybe, had it been sitting for a while and wouldn't run right when you started it?

Thank you guys.

The bike was sitting in the garage for 3 weeks (after a 150 mile ride).
Started fine, I went to to get gas (everything was OK) and then, about 5 minutes into the ride, it started losing power (1st and 2nd gear). I was pretty close to home, so limped back.
The only thing I did BEFORE the ride was to change my headlight assembly. (put in Cibie and Hella bulb).
So, at home I drained the carbs, drained the tank to see the fuel flow, cleaned the petcock filter (wasn't that bad).
The bike starts and idles great. Also idles with one cylinder at the time. But starts to loose power and sounds different as soon as I start riding (with occasional popping).

My next move is to get new spark plugs and to look at the air filter.

After a 150 mile ride your air filter may be plugged with oil from the crankcase breather.
It's a bit of a stretch but, if you've had cool nights in your area, this is the time of year mice start moving indoors and building nests for the winter, they seem to like air filter box's and mufflers.
