2024 New Year's ride in the Jersey Pine Barrens

Post by ReCycled » Sat Dec 02, 2023 6:04 pm

:moto: :party: It's time to start thinking about the 2024 New Years Ride in the Pines. :party: :moto:

Where;
We will start of in NJ's Brendan Byrne State Forest

Meet at the Pakim Pond parking lot off Coopers Rd.

When;
RESCHEDULED to Saturday January 13, 2024

Get there by 9:30am-ish.
Leave at 10:00am from the Pakim Pond parking area.
This is just a couple weeks after Winter Solstice so we want to make maximum use of available daylight.

What;
A day ride through Brendan Byrne State Park.
Lunch is your sandwich, snacks and drinks you bring with you on the trail. :hungry: :lurker:
There is a Wawa and gas station near Rt. 70 and 72, gas up and get grub before you arrive at Pakim pond.
Bring food! It can get chilly at times and a good meal will help you stay warm.

Riding;
All vehicles must be street legal.
If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a dual sport bike that's OK; he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and this area is usually free of water crossings.
If you get stuck there will be enough of us around to push/pull you out.
1wd or 2wd will be fine and a willingness to push a stuck bike would be nice.
Knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required.
We've had a Retro with a street tire do the ride in the past.

A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two wheelers along before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading.
This area is very Ural friendly. Trails are just wide enough to keep you on your toes.
The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off-camber.
If that sounds boring just tell me you are bored and I'll find some stuff that will swallow your rig whole. :twisted:

This is a "rain, snow or shine" ride, so dress appropriately.
Having several thin layers you can add/remove is better than one layer.
Nylon jackets, liners, windbreakers and/or pants in your layers will keep you warmer than thicker gear, as they stop the wind.
Monkeys should dress for snowmobiling; they are less active than riders and it gets cold in that metal tub.
Warm gloves, wool socks and waterproof boots go a long way in keeping riders and monkeys warm.
Spare layers, socks and gloves are a good idea if it is wet/extra cold.

Please come with most of a tank of gas and willingness to get your bike dirty.
Pack a lunch, snacks and drinks, as we'll be in the woods for several hours.

All skill levels/rigs welcome.
Due to relatively higher elevations this area is generally dry, with little to no water on the trails and usually no water crossings.
Gas/food is available at the Wawa Rt. 70 and 72, Woodland Twp. about 2 miles away. Please gas up/get food before you arrive.

PM or post if you have questions.

Dress warm, bring lots of layers and pray for snow! :naughty:
Hope to see you there!

Guess I'm not even going to bother w@$#ing the bike after the Thanksgiving ride. Might put the old, worn-out rear brake pads back on too... The new ones are just too pretty to be sacrificed in the sand.

Hang around with this group long enough and I think you learn to just let it be dirty. :lol:

I actually cleaned mine this past weekend... Mostly because In was due for an oil change and couldn't get to the filter through the caked on mud.

Won't make this one unfortunately - leaving for instrument rating training in Florida the next day.

Recent eye-surgery. I wouldn't have an excuse for hitting a tree on my left-side as I often do.
Stay safe and have a great ride.
And Happy New Year (...s ride).

Hello Folks,

I just joined the forum because I am interested in getting a Ural and figured this was a good place to gather info. I saw this post and I live in Burlington County, NJ, so I plan to show up at 9:30 on the 6th to ask a bunch of questions and see your bikes before you shove off.

I am very familiar with the area, as my buddies and I ride our two wheelers on nearby roads often and we've stopped at Hot Diggidy Dog in Chatsworth too many times to count.

Looking forward to meeting.

I'm glad to hear that Sam, especially after I questioned if a Ural was the right choice for you :)

Talking to multiple owners in one setting is great research. I'd offer you the seat in my sidecar for the day but another potential new owner already has dibs. You are welcome to ride along on your two wheeler if you'd like.

We have a decent "local" contingency of Ural owners. If you scroll back over Upcoming Rides & Ride Reports you should find the Jersey Devil Hunt which is three days of riding we do twice a year as well as a couple of annual day trips and a few spontaneous get togethers.

You are more than welcome to use my guy since he has a few trailers but his location might be a bit inconvenient for you.

2020 New Years Ride. Just a few weeks before the pandemic if you think about time passages.
Dave (recycled) had some minor electrical that was resolved. And I landed vertical on top of a fallen tree which popped-out the cir-clip holding the U-joint closest to the FD. Truly a unique situation in perhaps the most vulnerable spot under the bike no matter what skid-plate protection you have. There is nothing there.
And we (5-6 of us) couldn't move it either. So first time use of the electric winch (plus all of us) to get it off. Disconnected all and rode the rest of the day 1-wheel drive which we pretty much do anyways. And you know what... all still FUN.
