2021 Turkey Leftovers Ride aka Black Saturday Nov. 27th NJ Pines

Post by BinDerSmokDat » Wed Oct 13, 2021 9:00 am

What better way to give thanks than a day of Ural off-roading?
I'm happy to announce the Turkey Leftovers Ride (aka Black Saturday) will be November 27th, 2020.
With Thanksgiving so late this year, maybe we'll even see some snow.

Where
Wharton State Forest
Meet at the Atsion Ranger Station.

When
Saturday, November 27th.
Leave 9:30am-ish from the Atsion Ranger office parking area.
If you need to unload a bike or sort out your gear, get there earlier.

What
A day ride through Wharton State Forest and surrounding environs.
Lunch is your Thanksgiving Leftovers, sandwich, snacks and drinks you bring with you on the trail.
Mighty Joe's has gas and a deli, with good sandwiches.
You can grab fuel AND food there before you meet at the Rangers Station.
Bring food! It can get chilly at times and a good meal will help you stay warm.

Riding
All skill levels/rigs welcome.
A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two wheelers along.

All vehicles must be street legal. If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a plated dual sport bike, that's OK; he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and some water crossings.
If someone gets stuck, we all help push/pull each other out.
Either 1wd or 2wd will be fine.
A knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required.
We've literally had a Retro with a street tire do the ride before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading.
This area is very Ural friendly.
Trails are just wide enough to make it seem adventurous.
The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off camber. If that sounds boring just pick up the speed a bit or skip the chicken bypasses and navigate one of the deep holes.

This is a "rain, snow or shine" ride, so dress appropriately.
Wear layers, including a windproof layer.
Nylon windbreakers and jogging pants in your layers will keep you warmer than thicker gear, as they stop the wind.
Monkeys should dress for snowmobiling, they are less active than riders and they can get cold in that metal tub.
Warm gloves, wool socks and waterproof boots go a long way in keeping riders and monkeys warm.
Spare layers, socks and gloves are a good idea if it is wet/extra cold.

Please come with most of a tank of gas, willingness to get your bike dirty, and pack a lunch, snacks and drinks, as we'll be in the woods for several hours.

Gas
Gas up before you get to the Ranger Station, we hit the woods at 9:30-ish.

Mighty Joe's Gas Grill & Deli/ATM

Gulf
90 N White Horse Pike, Hammonton, NJ

PM or post if you have any questions.
We plan to start 9:30am, but I know some out-of-state people expressed an interest in attending.
If you are coming, PM or text me and let me know and we can delay the start until you arrive.
We usually get back to the start by dark.
If you have to leave earlier, we can usually get you back to asphalt so you can peel off from the group.

Hope to see you there!

For those of you (like me) who put off repairs, tire changes or maintenance, only 3 wrenching weekends to go.

I went for a nice long ride today to shake out the cobwebs, both mine and the bike's.

Looking forward to a nice long ride next week, with no traffic lights :)

Not actually a sidecar but pretty much identifies with tomorrows ride in the Pine Barrens. Especially after today's rain.
Have fun tomorrow guys.

That rain was just enough to keep the dust down :)

Should be perfect conditions tomorrow. Sunny and in the forties, comfy with the right gear.

It was only Recycled and I, we left the ranger's station at 10am and got back a little before 3pm after covering about 110km.
Figuring the knobby gear ration reduction and slippage we were about 100km.

It was fairly dry.
No real mud holes, in fact some areas were so dry we went past a few "hidden" lakes that we can't normally get to because of high water table.
One out near Mt Devious, another near Carranza and a third somewhere between the two.

No major carnage except for a quart bottle of Gatorade that managed to jump around in the trunk and perfectly knock a hold in the cap on a trunk hinge bolt, sprinkling my sandwich and the trunk contents with orange Gatorade.
Mmmm electrolytes.

I might have to try w@$#ing the tool roll as it is totally covered in sticky orange goodness.

All in all it was a good ride if a bit chilly.
It was dry and windy so the sun didn't even help much, thankfully we stayed dry.
