I remember when it was just called "four wheeling."
Or just plain “Wheelin”.
I just came across a couple of photos of one of my old trucks.
I wish I still had it but the GearUp scratches my itch nowadays.

I think that’s around 1989, it was taken off the back porch of my house at my old truck yard :D
I’d probably only go to an “Overland Expo” if it were free/cheap/nearby, I’m too busy living the dream

Happy trails,
Jaybird

I was driving past my local Land Rover dealer the other day and saw what looked like a motorcycle pannier hanging off the passenger side of one of SUVs.

I had to Google it and sure enough it's a .8 cu ft exterior storage compartment for your wetsuit or muddy boots.

Nice Jay! I've been threatening to get a beater pick-up again just to have the occasional fun, but haven't yet.
Like you said, teh Ural scratches that itch for now.

Those were the days, most trucks and "jeeps" (anything short wheelbase was a jeep, be it a Scout, Bronco or LandCrusier. The term SUV hadn't been invented yet) all had solid axles, locking hubs and a 2WD hi/lo lever.
Most had a straight 6 or V8, the occasional V6 but even a 4 cylinder Jeep could get you a lot of places.
You could buy a beater pick-up or Jeep for a weeks pay, sometimes less.
NAPA stocked all the parts you needed to get it running and keep it running.
You could stuff the biggest tires that would fit with a little fender trimming and handle 90% of the holes in the Pines.
A body lift got you a few more inches of clearance and if you splurged you could add another few inches with leaf springs all around.
Or cheap out and put blocks/helper springs in there to get some height.
A winch was a luxury, I had a friend who had an ancient Warn 8274 and I just made sure he was along if we were going to do anything really stupid.
Most times we just relied on a tow from a buddy or the HiLift jack rigged as a come-along.

OK I digress...the point is, I wouldn't go to an Overland event if someone paid me.
A bunch of farkles and gear that is way too expensive for my blood.
And after you outfit a rig for 50-70K (and believe me you can spend much more) then what?
You end up driving it daily with crappy mileage, tons of wind resistance, loud tires and less than ideal handling for commuting, just to be able to get away a handful of times a year.
And you need to really travel, up north to the Vermont area or south of VA to have access to remote areas where you can just camp anywhere.
Otherwise you are just camping where any old Honda can camp.

For me my current set-up is best.
The van towing the Aluma with the Ural on it gives me everything I need for now.
A permanent camper set-up that just needs gas, food, beer, ice and firewood topped off before heading out.
raining? No biggy, it's dry in the van no wet tent to fold up.
If I break the bike exploring, just got to get a lift back to the van to retrieve it.
I can still get home because of the redundancy of separate exploring vehicles and camping vehicles.
And the van can still be driven when needed to pick up oversized stuff or when the car is in the shop.

All in you could duplicate my set-up for under $25K including the van, Ural and trailer.

OK enough derailing my own post! :)

Holy $#!t those go for $1000!

I have one, it is much bigger than 0.8Cu ft.
It's called a sidecar; his and hers muddy boots go in the nose at the end of a trip, then my muddy riding gear on top.

Only 6 weekends left before the JDH...

Do those repairs you've been putting off.
Order a new tire to replace the slice of baloney you've been running that "still has some tread left at the shoulders."
Ask the boss (at home and at work) for time off to go play that weekend.

Glad you can make it Larry, put some shelf liner on the sidecar fender and the right nose of the tub.
Just in case Dave is leading, it will protect the paint from the branches. :-P

The rest of you, read this and get your bikes ready.
Only 3 wrenching weekends left!

We’re in… Maria and I plus a friend with a 2 wheeler Honda CRF450RL…who probably will go off-road… we’ll probably do the on-road again… but ya never know once at the pines.
We plan on getting there Thursday and camp in tents/van.
Looking forward to it.

I'm "out" sadly due to work :(
Guess it's ironic to say I had more free time to enjoy life during furlough. But definitely don't want to go back to that.
Chalk it up to a rehearsal for retirement in a couple years.

Enjoy and ride safe.

Woot! How could I forget about Tommy!
Amanda just found out she has to work Friday, so she will come down Friday afternoon.
I still might come down Thursday night, if not I'll leave at 7am Friday and be there bright and early.

Friday might be a good day to try the dirt route that goes from camp to Lucille's for breakfast...
