2020 Turkey Leftovers Ride aka Black Saturday NJ Pines

Post by BinDerSmokDat » Fri Oct 09, 2020 1:23 pm

What better way to give thanks than a day of Ural off-roading?
I'm happy to announce the Turkey Leftovers Ride (aka Black Saturday) will be November 28th, 2020.
With Thanksgiving so late this year, maybe we'll even see some snow.

Where
Wharton State Forest
Meet at the Atsion Ranger Station.

When
Saturday, November 28th.
Leave 9:30am-ish from the Atsion Ranger office parking area.
If you need to unload a bike or sort out your gear, get there earlier.

What
A day ride through Wharton State Forest and surrounding environs.
Lunch is your Thanksgiving Leftovers, sandwich, snacks and drinks you bring with you on the trail.
Mighty Joe's has gas and a deli, with good sandwiches.
You can grab fuel AND food there before you meet at the Rangers Station.
Bring food! It can get chilly at times and a good meal will help you stay warm.

Riding
All skill levels/rigs welcome.
A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two wheelers along.

All vehicles must be street legal. If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a dual sport bike that's OK; he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and some water crossings.
If someone gets stuck, we all help push/pull each other out.
Either 1wd or 2wd will be fine.
A knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required.
We've literally had a Retro with a street tire do the ride before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading.
This area is very Ural friendly.
Trails are just wide enough to make it seem adventurous.
The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off camber. If that sounds boring just pick up the speed a bit or skip the chicken bypasses and navigate one of the deep holes.

This is a "rain, snow or shine" ride, so dress appropriately.
Wear layers, including a windproof layer.
Nylon windbreakers and jogging pants in your layers will keep you warmer than thicker gear, as they stop the wind.
Monkeys should dress for snowmobiling, they are less active than riders and they can get cold in that metal tub.
Warm gloves, wool socks and waterproof boots go a long way in keeping riders and monkeys warm.
Spare layers, socks and gloves are a good idea if it is wet/extra cold.

Please come with most of a tank of gas, willingness to get your bike dirty, and pack a lunch, snacks and drinks, as we'll be in the woods for several hours.

Gas
Gas up before you get to the Ranger Station, we hit the woods at 9:30-ish.

Mighty Joe's Gas Grill & Deli/ATM
1231 U.S. 206, Shamong, NJ

Gulf
90 N White Horse Pike, Hammonton, NJ

PM or post if you have any questions.
We plan to start 9:30am, but I know some out-of-state people expressed an interest in attending.
If you are coming, PM or text me and let me know and we can delay the start until you arrive.
We usually get back to the start by dark.
If you have to leave earlier, we can usually get you back to asphalt so you can peel off from the group.

Hope to see you there!

I don't look at my bike as "fixed" or "broke."
I like to think that it's all just variations of "being" and some of those variations the bike works well and in others it doesn't.

(I can be philosophical right now because my bike is fixed and running well, ask me again when it's not. )

Hope to see you Larry if you can make it.

Oh man, I'd love to join. Ive done a lot of riding all over the country and southern NJ might be the best uraling anywhere.
Have fun!
