Levee Ride -South Central Louisiana - January 25-27, 2019

Post by SwampFox » Tue Nov 27, 2018 9:00 am

Target date for the 2019 Levee Ride is January 25-27, 2019, conditioned upon both weather and road conditions - preferences are limited chance of rain, afternoon temps over 46°F and no rain in the past couple of days prior to the ride. We’ll plan to make a GO or NO GO decision by lunch-time on Wednesday, January 23rd.

We have ±4 of us sidecarists planning to ride our TW200's on this ride, but this ride is suitable for any vehicle appropriate for traveling public gravel/dirt roads. The primary plan is to meet up at Larry & Barbara’s home on 121 Ripleys Lane in Bunkie by dark on Friday the 25th, where we can park our tow vehicles. If you haven’t been there, it's pretty easy to find as Ripley's Lane is, literally, their driveway. A bunkhouse is available (please bring a sleeping bag/pad if you plan to bunk in the bunkhouse), or if you prefer, the All-Star Inn motel is 1 mile away (318-346-8113). Friday supper is planned at Larry & Barbara’s.

Saturday’s primary route as planned is ±150 miles with ±60 miles gravel, with a gas stop at ±45 miles & gas/snack/lunch stop ±85 miles in Catahoula - lunch restaurant may be closed, but there is grocery store with deli. We have an option for ±32 mile extension to Burns Point Park should we want to see the Gulf of Mexico. If time permits, there is a pre-WWII aviation racing museum in Patterson well worth the visit. We’ll plan to overnight in Morgan City on Saturday night - motel choices include the Red Roof Inn or LaQuinta Inn. Supper is planned the Atchafalaya Café.

The planned Sunday return route is ±135 miles with ±60 miles gravel with gas/snack stop at ±85 miles. We’ll try to return to Bunkie by 1:00pm. There is an option to cut the last ±12 miles of gravel road if time constrained.

Please let us know if you need further info – and if you plan to come, as Barbara needs a head count.

TW200's? That sounds familiar and hand-in-hand with Ural ownership. Two oddball bikes.

That sounds like a really nice ride. I didn't realize it got that cool down there during the daytime in the Winter?

Oddballs? Yep. And I've heard folks bemoan selling two particular motorbikes: TW200 & Ural. Sold because each is "too slow." BUT, problem is, the replacements just weren't as much fun. Solution: Take opportunities to ride with fellow TW & Ural enthusiasts -and have more fun! :moto:

As stated by character Joe Gill in Crossfire Trail: Slow down, son. Take your time. You'll have a more harmonious outcome.

I've ridden variations of this ride for several years, all in January, experiencing temps from low of 34°F to high of 70°F - just never know what to expect in wintertime down on the Cajun Coast.

The unreliable extended forecast for Morgan City is favorable for the Levee Ride, with no major rain predicted for the week before and mostly sunny skies for Saturday the 26th with high’s of ±54°F, but with an overnight low of ±36°F, so we’ll need to be ready for a cold start down on the Cajun Coast.

NOTE re: Saturday night lodging: Some have opted to overnight at the LaQuinta Inn in Morgan City, which is a couple blocks away from the previously discussed Red Roof Inn.

This ride could go on for weeks with stops at the Yi-Ki-Ki in Opelousas and the Yellow Bowl in Jennerette, all the restaurants by the levee in Cecelia and beer joints in New Iberia!

Man, Im jealous. I worked down there for a couple decades. I really miss Acadiana! Sooo many bayous/roads to explore while stumbling into great small burgs(not Morgan City), cafes, locals. Urals were built for those wet muddy bayou roads. And in Jan you won't need to haul along a gal of bug dope. :)
I'm too far away for the trip down so please someone that goes, take some pics and don't be afraid of food you can't pronounce or spell...it's all good.

Yep, once venturing off the "truck routes" this is a great area to explore, even tho this ride, as proposed, bypasses most of the small communities. Morgan City just happens to be a best terminus for this overnight route. Unfortunately, Rita Mae's cajun/soul kitchen closes too early for our Saturday evening meal, so no Rita Mae's Gumbo & CrabBurgers this trip. :(
