Anyone own a school bus?

Post by mtrdrms » Fri Dec 21, 2018 8:13 pm

I'm thinking about picking up an old bus to use as a camper/guest house. I know the international/bluebird busses are a good start. Just curious if anyone here had any input.

Friend bought a short bus to use as a flea marketeer. You have to paint them as National Schoolbus Chrome (aka yellow) is illegal for privately owned busses. Big bucks to repaint. So he painted it with a roller and Sears Best.

I have a nice little short bus.....it's a 2002 Ford with a 7.3 diesel in it. In Oregon (as far as I know) they don't seem to give a rats arss if you leave the yellow paint in place, I've been driving it around for a few years now and haven't been stopped. Although you do need to remove all the markings on the rig as they will get pissy about that. That said I do know that other states don't allow you to keep it yellow. Someday I will paint it a different color, but I'll have to save a bunch of pennies to do it. I chose a short rig just so I could get it into places one might run into while out in the boonies.

You have to love the "land of the free and home of the brave" tied down with so many legal requirements. Where I am. I can paint my vehicle in any colour I like.

I started down the Skoolie path earlier this year with a 95 International. Gutted the innards then threw in the towel. www.skoolie.net is an excellent resource - is to skoolies what soviet steeds is to sidecars - lots of great support and advice.

Pretty amazing website/forum. Thanks for posting.

54vintage, very nice and I never thought about these little short school bus's (is this a real word?) as conversion campers. Good idea.

Realized I don't have the skills to do what needed to be done (safely). That was about a $1,000 dollar lesson after sales tax, tagging and insuring it for 6 months. I was able to sell for $200 less than what I paid for it. Fun experience for the most part but I don't want to remove another stubborn screw for a few years (tackled about 500 of them gutting the insides).

Jay's BlueBird is suhweeet.

Converting a school bus is a ton of work.
And if you want to actually put miles on it, they suck to drive.

Better you score a used camper and save some time and aggravation.
I thought about converting a commercial panel van or U haul as a camper capable of hauling a Ural. In the end I decided to camperize an Econoline and drag the Ural on an Aluma.
