Netflix Binge! (your thumbs-up recomendations)

Post by tx2sturgis » Tue Mar 21, 2017 11:01 am

Although we don't tend to brag much about how long we sit and watch the tube, I think a few shows on Netflix are worth a look-see:

I have greatly enjoyed 'Hell on Wheels', 'Marco Polo', and 'Halt and Catch Fire'.

Anyone else out there willing to admit a Netflix addiction?

D'you like shows set slightly in the future that focus on the way technology changes society with unpredictable results?
Try the British show Black Mirror. Every episode is it's own self-contained little "movie", so you can watch them in any order. It's one of those shows that, after watching an episode, you ask, "Who thinks UP this stuff?!" I'm hooked!

Mostly, serials and other shows that we like to watch on Netflix.

I especially like intelligently-written period dramas, set in another world and another time where we can never visit in real life.

Marco Polo is about well, you guessed it, Marco Polo and the fictionalized stories based on the merchants and traders along the silk road in the 13th century, and is one of the most expensive 'TV format' shows ever made. It focuses on a young Marco as he figures how to get along in a strange new place. Lots of violence, sword fights, blood and guts, beheadings, and some nudity, but you know, a treat for the eyes, and well written stuff. Great music, of mostly Mongolian style, adds a treat for the ears.

Hell on Wheels is about the USA's post-civil war struggles that the former North and South are going thru, as they begin to build a trans-continental railroad. Lots of drama, cowboys and Indians, heroes and villains, great scenery, a real railroad, and shoot-em-up gun fights. Tons of texture.

Halt and Catch Fire is sort of an alternate fictional timeline (parallel universe?) of our involvement with computers, gaming, and networking in its infancy. (If you ever played with Commodore computers or BBS's, you will like this show). It maps out a believable world with familiar companies like Microsoft, Apple, Atari, IBM, etc, but adds a few new players into the mix, along with the brilliant men and women who made all this happen, but drills deep into all the behind-the-scenes personal issues that they went through. The actual 1980's era show props are a huge source of delight.

(closed circuit for Tomcatfixer: You should watch this last one!)

Mad Men
Bates Motel (waiting for new episodes)
Turn (waiting for new episodes)
Better Call Saul (waiting for new episodes)
Halt & Catch Fire (waiting for new episodes)

Yeah AMC has got some good stuff...

The Making of a Serial Killer was a good mini-series.

I started Breaking Bad and House of Cards but it didn't catch on for me.

If you never saw the series "LOST", I think that's on Netflix too. X-Files and Star Trek re-runs are good too.

Guys...guys...guys, The Kindness Diaries. Guy goes around the world on a yellow Chang Jiang, relying on the kindness of strangers for food and shelter.

Then, when the poorest of the poor share willingly, he pays them back with things like houses and new tuk-tuks, education, and clean water systems, etc.

Guy's kinda annoying, but even I teared up a little on some.
I have a funny wife. Hilarious, really.
I love her, she loves me.

I mostly watch movies on Net Flix, unfortunately a lot of the movies are 3rd rate, some good vintage movies.
The most memorable thing I saw lately was a documentary called ABOVE & BEYOND - the history of the Israeli Air Force. They started out flying re-engined surplus ME109s - Great true story.
I'm an avid Film Noir fan, & find great rare ones, & Vintage Brit mysteries on YOU TUBE - FOR FREE.

I forgot about those...

Thanks for the reminder.

Did you know that the two blonde actresses in Battlestar Galactica ride motorcycles?

Both Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff (now THERES a last name a man would not want!) have ridden on some celebrity rides and short tours in the SOCAL area.

Mad Men...

You know that show started out so well..but somewhere in the second season it lost it's way I think. I dont know if they ran out of ideas or just got bored...or what.

I kept watching though...thinking something good is bound to happen...and it just never did.

But yeah, AMC puts out some good original stuff.
