I finally got the motivation to start on the fuel tank. I've been putting it off most of the last year. It's gonna be another mini-project.

When I stripped the paint off, I found filler underneath.

I was surprised how well the rock tumbling worked. Nuts and regular gray rocks went in, Mars came out:

Got the filler cap taken apart and ready for repair.

This is my 4th tank interior, but I've never done the outside of a tank before. Should be interesting.

The project is moving slow right now, but here's a couple pictures of the progress I've made with the fuel tank:

Since I was holding it like a caught fish, I hung it from a scale just for fun. Turns out I caught a 7.2 lb Red... Herring? Yeah, my humor muscle may be broken.

Very nice Mike. You could have given it a little more paint to get a shiny surface. The primer looks real tidy.
I can´t wait until your Bike is ready to go. You spent a lot of time in bringing it back to the road and you deserve success!

The paint does look a bit orange peel. A slightly heavier coat to allow it to flow out as it reduces will help that. Gotta be careful though. Too heavy and you get curtain runs! Don't ask how I know that. I once repainted a fairing 9 times. My son told me "You know Dad, a normal person would have given up after a few tries". But as a geek, I viewed it as a learning experience. By the end of it, I could lay paint like a boss! Great project! Thanks for sharing this.
This is my step ladder. I never got to know my real ladder.

Yeah, I'm a novice spray painter. I'll probably come back and work on this some more later. Another can of clear coat, and maybe some Turtle w@*? I don't know. I've read that paints don't hold up to gasoline well, and being a gas tank... I'm looking for something to protect the paint from fuel drips. The paint that Ural uses certainly doesn't work, LOL. I thought a w@* might let it bead and fall off like water would.

Anyway, it's protected from rust for a while, which is the primary objective. :)

There´s a very good way to protect the paint: Just don´t spell gasoline when filling up...
