Does anyone have an observation tower?

Post by 4REICH » Fri Dec 13, 2019 4:02 am

tower2.jpg
3 years ago I had to take down a 40 foot tower with a 32' floor. A neighbor and I erected it and it had to come down because it was 5' too close to the property line. Code states a structure must be equal in height as in distance from the property line or any other structure. The overall design didn't turn out as envisioned, my comrade and I had opposing ideas on roof designs and since he is a better welder he won. Its laying on the ground sans roof which will not be reattached. Hoping to erect it this spring. This is an eclectic group does anyone have a similar interest?

There's something like that on a bike path I travel, only just a floor and made from wood. Figured it was for hunters but didn't seem very practical.

Yes, it's not practical. I bought a shipping container from an iron worker he included two 20' pieces of large diameter pipe that was stored for a crane project he never got around to. Because the metal was basically free I suddenly realized the importance of a tower. I live near the mountains and observe the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Neighbors were split. Guys really liked it

20' old lifeguard tower welded up from some heavy wall 2.5" tube. Got it from the City of Cleveland when they stopped having lifeguards on city beaches. Self standing - no foundation or guy supports needed. Full square of tube at base, mid-height, with extra cross bracing at floor deck and roof. I use 6ft pieces of hooked rebar for anchors. 6'x8' floor and same for roof. Ladder access. Great critter spotter. Best part about it is that I can remove the plywood deck/roof and fell it without damage .

That thing is epic! I would love to have something like that..... but I’d probably end up attaching a zip line to it (or rappelling lines)..... and that would most likely get me in trouble

A neighbor asked what happened to the shooters tower, I had to downplay that terminology no its not a blind. Neighbors hate backyard towers, one told me her property value went down $30 grand, another accused me of setting it up to spy on them. A lot of people appreciated the character, it could be seen as a landmark. I'm now friendly with the inspector and in a rural area we enjoy more freedoms. I have a full 33' length of 3inch oil well pipe and other pieces of drop off Ill sleeve together with the hope I can use it to slide down although I am not crazy and don't know if I can stabilize it enough. I'm not on board with the zip line idea yet but my son gave me 50 feet of thick climbing rope with hopes he'll see video of a climb. Thanks for the feedback, the tower was up for months. I had to question if being known as the owner of the tower was a good thing, and have been debating on whether or not to set it back up. Some miles away on the hwy this stands, people don't pay much attention to it, just part of the landscape

Sure it counts. I've been toying with the idea of setting up a mini hi-rise since I can get 40' container delivered for well under 3 grand. I would dig a ten foot hol, stand it straight up and have a 8x8' observation deck on a 30' tower. The only real thing holding me back is that I think i the crane would be cost prohibitive

I rented a six wheel drive 25 ton crane with an operator to move a boat, it cost $700.
