drive shaft range of motion?

Post by hotflash44 » Tue Jul 04, 2017 11:00 am

Hi, guys, with all the drive shaft/donut issues lately i was trying to get my brain around the range of motion maximum up and down movement of the Ural drive shaft. Okay a u-joint at the rear fd end of the shaft then up the shaft is the spline and then the donut with the double set of pins/forks. My confusion is at the donut when the fd moves up high as hitting a bump does the donut flex do the pins move up and down with in the donut ? i would like to see a video of the Ural being driven so i could see the up and down movement of the drive shaft. Most shaft driven vehicles have a u-joint at each end that i understand! Guess i want to know how violent the action is at the donut while driving a Ural especially when fast and bumpy.

And what will you do with said knowledge? Donut failure is not that common with the odds of shearing teeth in the FD far more likely in rough off-road and/or overloaded riding.

somebody had a video of the driveshaft, donut and u joint at speed here not too long ago. The dounut acts like a u joint, allowing change in angle, while also absorbing some shock. If your are getting up and down or sideways motion the holes are probably egging out and time to replace it.

chaos2 that's what i thought it acts like a u-joint, just thought seeing the donut in action would be very interesting. That's one tough little piece of rubber!

Lokiboy, the said info would be just for reference, really who has ever seen the notorious donut in action, just to see the shaft forks on both the trans and the drive shaft doing their thing, would be interesting. But the simple explanation that chaos2 gave will do for me right now.
