using a bit of an old tread

I think my starters solenoid is going.

Some times when I hit the button it engages and all is well, but more frequently now it just spins. After a could of spin cycles it will engage and start.

So I am thinking solenoid is not engaging.

Ideas?

Are the solenoid a available as a separate part, or possibly is this just a clean and de rust?

mine must suck water, armature and field coils rust up brush spring corrode and break. I have had a gen/starter shop rebuild it and I cleaned it up once myself. Glad it kick starts as easy as it does but I was wonder how much better the new ones are sealed up.

My guess would be the bendix unit(starter drive) isn't kicking out to engage the flywheel.
