Oil Pan bolt washers

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Oil Pan bolt washers

Post by RAMDrive » Sun Jul 14, 2019 3:08 pm

Yesterday I replaced the oil pan gasket with the recommended silicon reusable gasket. I did not realize the bolts used crush washers, which I didn't have. I did use standard washers, but that backfired and oil is dripping from one of the bolts close to the shifter. The solution I plan is to drain and clean the oil. Then put some type of RTV in the leaking bolt hole and remount everything. Does someone know where I can order replacement crush washers, and a part number too?

Once you determine the bolt size, go to an industrial supply and ask for Dowty washers that size.

They're safer and easier to use than crush washers as they only need to be lightly snug to seal and stay in place. They will also last many years and oil changes.

I've seen them in auto parts stores too.

10 years ago I replace my drain bolt washers with nylon drainbolt washers from the local Ace hardware, still using those same washers.

He's talking about the bolts that hold the pan on.

Interisting, my 2007 has plain and split washer combination. My 2018 has Dowty washers. Didn't know they used crush washers for a time, kinda threw me.

Here's a source.

Unless the seal did not go around the bolts, any washer should work.

Possible bolts go into the empty space but that unusual.

Granted I am not a Ural specialist by any stretch.

I have replaced a lot of differential covers with silicone seal and no crush washers.

If the bolt holes for the pan are thru-drilled so that they are open to the sump, that is what causes oil to seep from the bolts. The gasket is not in play as long as it surrounds the bolt hole in the pan/sump flanges. Easy fix is to you Loctite 567 on the bolts. It is both a sealant and a thread locker. This saves you having to compress the gasket excessively. Just snug them up and they will stay put. And now you can use regular flat washers.

I've been using 567 on screw-in petcocks for years. Triumph used Dowdy washers and they are not 100% foolproof. 567 is. I think you could put a petcock in finger tight and it would never leak nor move.

Thanks, makes sense and the 567 would be a nice move.

Be sure to get the holes clean of oil, any residue needs to be gone.

One of the modern brake cleaners works fine. FDX cleaner is great stuff if you can find it, non haz and as good as TriClore was.
