Brake light always on

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Brake light always on

Post by RAMDrive » Sat Apr 20, 2019 2:35 pm

Found out today my brake light is always on when the key is on. I pulled the brake light fuse and it didn’t go off. It did got off when I pulled the headlight/taillight fuse. Maybe it’s a short somewhere?

Any ideas how to locate the short or someone else experience this?

Both rears, on sidecar too?
Disco the sidecar, see if the problem goes away or stays with the bike. Then, I'd start tracing the wire from the taillight back.

Any mods? Accessory lights?

unlikely, but I once had one of the filaments on a dual filament bulb drop down and short out the other filament. I think the sidecar brakelight is dual filament, could be the problem but that's probably way too easy.
past afflictions include limey motocars and bikes, R60/2, R65ls, and a Citroen.

Front brake switch is likely loose. It is held on by a small screw. If you don't hear a "click" when you lighty tap the lever, this is the problem. Check and adjust.

But he says, take brake fuse out no difference, take lights fuse out, it goes out, says to me there's a short between the two in the sidecar rear lamp. These lamps are not the most brilliant design must be said, and are quite crude internally. The sidecar bulb is a double filament, so has two 'live' terminals close together, my guess at this stage is bulb is slightly skewed so bridging them together. Just a guess but early on I made the mistake of putting a dab of WD40 on the bulb bases of mine, this made the sidecar bulb too loose and play silly buggers and not want to stay in its socket, I ended up having to use loctite to make it stay put!

1157 bulbs can get reversed. Pull bulb, turn it 180 degrees, put bulb back in.

That as well!

But I'm thinking maybe slightly turned so that one of the ellyptical contacts on the base is bridging both copper strips.

Any chance it is the rear brake switch? Mine needed adjustments after I found it on all the time.

Found the fix. I removed each bulb, then replaced one at a time and tested between. The hack tail/brake light had the incorrect bulb in it; Just as stated, a single filament bulb will fit when it should be a dual. The single pole caused the two leads to short.

Thanks again the to best moto community around! :boogie:

Like most things Ural... you’ll find it’s usually an easy fix... it’s the finding-the-issue that’s the problem...

Thanks for letting us know the outcome... it’ll help others in the future...
