2018 Knocking at Idle

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

2018 Knocking at Idle

Post by Ajax » Sat Apr 06, 2019 7:22 pm

Just noticed this knocking today on this 2018 GU with 3500 miles on it. Any help figuring it out would be appreciated.

Prior to taking the video, did you verify the correct valve clearances when the engine was cold?

Yes. Plugs as well.

Thought maybe fuel starvation... picked up a new filter that needs to installed to see if that's any help.

As you know, "girlfriends" can be a problem, even more than the Ural.

Lol. Yeah. It was hell trying to ask her if she heard this noise before....watching the vid she still couldn't hear it, she just heard the normal vavle noise.

When I get that filter on I'll check the noise again with a engine stethoscope to pin point the area better.

Good luck with diagnosing the problem. Just a nonsensical tidbit here, girlfriends can be a real pain. I've found that dogs make better companions, really have. Granted, something is missing, but no issues, just total devotion. My dog Pugsley is unconditionally devoted to me, and gotta say, never found a woman like that. Granted, something is missing but the devotion, true love, etc, is just hard to find in humankind. I do envy you if you've found a true soulmate.

Just at idle/low RPM huh? Exhaust leak is a strong possibility. Before you start tearing stuff apart, get a couple feet(3?) of garden hose, put one end to your ear and run the other end over any exh connections, head/cyl connections etc. Easy/quick to to do just use a hollow medium rather than solid. On and 018 likely just assembly bind/stress/misalignment rather than wear.

I checked the vavle clearance and installed the needed fuel filter but it's still knocking non rhythmically. Found my engine stethoscope and traced the sound near the area of the crank on the engine case.
Maybe it's time to let the dealer deal with this now since it's under warranty?
