Dead 2018 GU

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

isn't this still under warranty?
Sure is. The closest dealer is 100 miles away and they don’t have time to look at it for another 3 weeks.

Couldn’t agree more. The bike is less than a year old and has been nothing but problems since day 1. After having it for only 4 weeks when I bought it, it ended up spending 7 weeks in the shop because that closest dealer couldn’t get their poop in a group.

Take a look at the wiring diagram.

https://static1.squarespace.com/static/ ... 281%29.pdf

Might want to find and check the 30A fuse that sites between the battery and the key switch.
Thanks! Any idea where that fuse might be?
Well according to the wiring diagram it should be on a yellow wire off the battery (+) post, between the battery and the alternator. Should be relatively close to the battery.

Don't confuse it with the 20A fuse that goes between the battery and the sidecar.

Thanks, I’ll check it when I get home. Would that also prevent the LCD from showing the current time when the key isn’t in the bike?

Perhaps a faulty fuel cap is creating a vacuum.
Are the OEM fuel caps vented? I never checked. I've been using a non-vented aftermarket gas cap for years without issue.
There's a seperate vent hose? Goes down behind right cylinder? Unless the 2018 tanks are different to the 2016's

Battery is reading 12.68v. When I turn the key though, nothing happens at all. No lights, no cycling of the needle or LCD no fuel pump. Is the key switch the problem?
Could be. Also there's a 4-way block that connects it into the harness. (Or mine is.) Could be either. One of those wires is battery live.

Does park lights position work?

No, nothing at all works. Not even the LCD with the key out. Speedometer does nothing when turning the key, fuel pump won’t run.

Found that online fuse under the seat, blown. The weird thing is it’s 20A fuse, not 30 as listed on the wiring diagram. Should I replace it with a 30A fuse or stick to 20A?

Wiring diagram shows it should be a 30A. Maybe why the 20A blew. I’d put a 30A in.

man thats great probably the cause please tell us as soon as you can! 9 out of 10 times when i replace a fuse it cures the problem but if it pops again you need to look for a short. might keep a few fuses in the trunk .

I just put in a new 30A fuse. LCD display came back on right away. So far so good. Now to find out if it’ll start since before all this happened, it had sputtered to a stop. Turned the key, lights went on. BRS: fuel pump came on. Starter button. Bike roars to life. Let it warm up while resetting my LCD colour and clock. Hopefully the stalling was just the bike being temperamental. Going to take it to the dealer once they can schedule me in.

Thanks for the help everyone, especially that wiring diagram and the suggestion to check that inline fuse!

Looking at 2018 wiring diagram. Very interesting! I can see where this 30A fuse is now.

Very different to my 2016 harness, completely different wire colors, more fuses and two more relays, the latter appear to cut out the headlight when starter button is pressed. (?)

I wonder if that’s to give the starter maximum juice.
