I may need a new clutch

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.
Forum rules
Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

I may need a new clutch

Post by atlasheating » Mon Mar 18, 2019 1:58 pm

So when I was getting onto a freeway onramp I felt the Ural kind of lurch in 2nd and then when revving it up in 3rd I felt the lurch again.
It didn't do that again until I rode it again on Saturday. It is like pulling the clutch briefly in while powering down the road (mostly in 3rd gear)
It is doing it more and more. The transmission and rear end are not making any noise. I am thinking the splines on the clutch are wearing out.
2014 Patrol with 25,500KM. I bought it used, so the first 22,000KM I do not know how it was ridden.
What do you think??
If I replace the clutch, should I just replace the clutch discs?

Most likely the transmission, mine was doing that then it started jumping out of gear in 3rd
past afflictions include limey motocars and bikes, R60/2, R65ls, and a Citroen.
Now an 87 K75s, DB Haanjo gravel bike, a DB hardtail mtn bike, and a rusty 2012 GU bought new
dual K&N cones on homemade intake, 40/137.5
Raceway needles, Modtop exhaust
$29 VW Hydraulic steering dampener

If clutch splines are slipping then it would make this horrible noise -

Is it making that noise? Too loud to be missed or not heard I would have thought.

How’s your clutch adjustment?

You might also swing the steering through it’s arc while watching the clutch arm down at the tranny... if the PO misrouted the cable it could be hanging up somewhere causing it to tighten with handlebar movement...

Or...

You may need a new clutch...

Worn dogs and selectors! fixed it last summer and it's been a pleasure to use since

Van,
I don't think the previous owner touched the clutch. I asked him specifically about the clutch and he said it was good. I have ridden it about 3,000KM without any problems.

Regardless.
Pull the gear box look at clutch
But first pull the rear wheel and look at the hub splines you might get lucky

I can do that right now. I never thought of the wheel hub. I have an extra one on my spare.

No Such Luck. I pulled the rear wheel and the splines on that are fine. I will get to the transmission today or tomorrow.
