Software Update...Just Do It!!

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.
Forum rules
Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Well, Mike, perhaps UoNE loaded your bike with OR1.02 when they sold it to you, then eventually upgraded their software to OR1.03. I'm surprised that your 2018 wasn't initially loaded with OR1.03.
In any event, it seems that this "new" map is over a year old.
Maybe, but that would be way out of character for Ural of NE. They are always on top of their game.

I’m checking with them for clarification.

I'll have to dig through my old e-mails, but I'm almost certain that Jason at IMWA told me that OR 1.02 was developed for the "first generation" ElectroJet ECU's, which were attached to the 2014-2015 (2016?) cast-finish throttle bodies. When the "second generation" ECU's were released on the shiny-finish throttle bodies, OR 1.03 was developed for them. OR 1.03 is not "better" than 1.02. It's the same map, just optimized for the new ECU.

Here is is:

"Chad,
The OR mapping has not changed in years, the only variation you see 1.02 vs 1.03 is related to model year software requirements. Your dealer will simply need to load the bike with the correct year, there is only two options, 2014-2016 or 2017-current.

Best regards,

Jason Rae"

The most important thing is that all bikes run as well as they are designed to run. We have had cases, for one reason or another, an individual bike will run better on an older version of programming, so always keep in mind there is not a one size fits all approach.

I am getting old......and forgetful. Heidnl's post jogged my memory on that there was an iteration after OR1.02 to OR1.03 in 2017.

Sorry for any confusion from my first post.

It still doesn't alleviate the fact that there are really only two maps you can have loaded in your bike. Bike comes with factory EPA compliant map. Dealer has to load OR map.

Update after further conversation with Ural of NE:

As others have correctly pointed out, the most recent off-road map is either OR1.02 or OR1.03 depending on model year. The "software update" I received is the generic term they use for clearing trouble codes and re-flashing the ECU memory. I suspect the performance improvement I have experienced is attributable to the resync of the throttle bodies.

Sorry for any confusion I caused!

Happy Uraling!

thanks for posting the conclusion of the issue. all makes sense to me at least. found it useful to know about the ability to re-flash and reset the Electrojet ECUs. wonder how many of our Ural fuelie drivers might need this service? PS, im waiting to find out how the 2019 ECU is going to behave, and what software etc will me available for the DIY Uralista.

Hi, Mike.
Can you comment on the gaskets and seals that were replaced? Just wondering if I need to monitor the same on my 2018 GU.
I should mention that all of the leaks were very minimal. Truthfully, I hadn’t noticed any of them in my inspections or maintenance procedures. So, I wouldn’t get nervous..perhaps just particular places to keep an occasional eye on.

- Alternator seal, gasket, o-ring
- Clutch slider o-ring
- Main seal and lock washer
- Final drive gasket
- Neutral light sensor seal
Thank you, Mike.
Safe riding.
