Cracked rims

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Hello All,

I now have 4 new rims on the bike... my dealership (Shails) laced four new aluminum rims to the old hubs. The new rims are all dated late 2018 and I'm told by the dealer that the mother ship supplied them as "new type" rims. There was no charge of any sort for this work... I didn't even pay for the new balancing weights.

I don't have an old rim to compare with... but to my eye the new ones look just like the old.

It's great to have the bike back on the road... time will now tell.

To be clear, all of my old rims are dated May 2013.

I have contacted the original selling dealer (note that I am the second owner, though I know the original owner well) and IMZ, and in both cases was told explicitly that there is "no warranty" for these rims, so I do not see any recourse for me financially at this point. I have bought three rims and four sets of spokes and have started lacing wheels.

I strongly suspect that if something similar occurred for a high-volume manufacturer (say, Honda) that there would be a mandated safety recall on these rims. Since the rims did not crack as the result of an accident (pothole) and since it occurred on all three wheels that touched the ground, it seems clear that there is a manufacturing defect.

This extended 6-year warranty must be something special for Canada. Has anyone in the US been told of such a warranty?

would assume if in the future someone gets hurt with a rim cracking,(hope not),that a class action law suit could be done. only say this because i see many class action law suits where a company didn't address a safety issue that they were aware of. that said im sure that alloy rims arnt designed to be abused, but if it could be proven that these are manufacture stress cracks from bad metallurgy or design, that is different. anyway hope this rim issue has been corrected as i think the newer rims seem to be good.

Very Helpful discussion. I just discovered ALL FOUR rims cracked on my 2015 GU w/ 5,280 km. Pusher built 10/13 - the other 3 rims built 8/14. I got the GU used last year with 3,000 km but i did not think to check the rims at purchase - so dont know if it was pre-existing or not. (But I really dont think Robby would have sold it that way - hes been very reasonable & reliable to work with so far) So I contacted the Salem dealer where I bought it - he's going to contact Jason. There doesn't appear to be any real hard-fast rules in place on rim coverage - except for the 2012 recall affected owners & our Canadian cousins might have a 6 year rim warranty. :? (Since these are Russian machines and Canada maybe getting a better deal... Should we have Trump call Trudeau?) Will let ya know what happens - more will be revealed.

Well there's a thought. I didn't hear directly from Trudeau (or Putin - but think that's a GOOD thing) But fortunately all is resolved, or at least trending in a positive direction. Robby at Raceway Ural in Salem Ore took up the issue with Jason and all I gotta do now is get it down there from Olympia for rim replacement / repair. I gotta say that Both Robby and the Ural mother ship in Redmond (aka Jason) have been pretty darn responsive to resolving customer issues. At least that has been my experience thus far. I knew what i was buying when I got the GU - so I'm fine with its quirks & idiosyncrasies. It's the unexpected / surprise stuff that is really the measure of a company and how they do business. Kudos to both of them. :clap: Just my 2c.

My 2018 Retro that I got in April has rims stamped 2016 so dont assume your rims age match your bikes age.

I've got another on it's way to Woody's Wheel Works here in Denver because of a cracked steel wheel. I'll order a Ural wheel have Woody use oversize stainless spokes and put it back together. Between Dirty Dr, me and others no one has has issues since.
If you play you pay, the only fault I see with Ural wheels is they rust like a 55 chevy
