Connected to ECU's and Balanced Throttle Bodies!!!!!!!

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.
Forum rules
Please keep this section specific to issues pertaining to 2014 and later models such as fuel injection, sidecar and rear disc brakes and so forth. Ask general or non-2014 and later specific questions in the main Hammerin' & Wrenchin' section.

Connected to ECU's and Balanced Throttle Bodies!!!!!!!

Post by Motorcycle Mariner » Tue Mar 14, 2017 2:13 pm

Connecting to Ural ECU's and balancing throttle bodies can be done without dealer software!!!!!!

I found a post from a Ural rider in Europe. He was able to make the OBDII adapter cable and figure out the CAN HI and CAN LO pin out on the Ural diagnostic port. See below link.

http://www.highvoltagecoils.eu/2015/10/ ... agnostics/

To make the adapter cable you will need to order 1 Molex connector, at least 6 pin sockets from Mouser Electronics and 1 OBD II extension cable.

Molex Automotive Connectors 6CKT RECPT 18-22AWG
Mouser Part #: 538-19418-0011
Manufacturer Part #: 19418-0011
http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDet ... 19418-0011

Molex Automotive Connectors SOCKET 22-18 AWG
Mouser Part #: 538-19420-0010
Manufacturer Part #: 19420-0010
http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDet ... 19420-0010

OBD II extention cable easily found on Amazon.

The video below should help you assemble the adapter cable.

Molex Terminal Inserting.JPG
Molex Terminal Releasing.JPG
After your adapter cable is made you will need OBD II software and a cable to connect to a PC.

I used "OBDLink SX Scan Tool" cable ($30) from Scantool.net, which comes with free activation code for OBDWiz software.

http://www.scantool.net/obdlink-sx/

Or you can get "OBDLink LX Bluetooth Scan Tool" ($50), which also come with free activation code for OBDWiz. This will connect to a PC with Bluetooth capabilities and do all the same as the USB cable. It will also work with Android phones and work with the free OBDLink app. Plus if you have a handle bar phone mount you now can have a tachometer on your phone while driving. I have not tested this yet but will. Sorry IPhone users, think you are left out of this option.

http://www.scantool.net/obdlink-lxbt/

You will also need to upgrade the free OBDWiz software with "OBDwiz Professional Add-On" ($40) from obdsoftware.net

http://www.obdsoftware.net/software/professionaladdon

With all the software and cables you will be able to connect to your PC and read each ECU, but only one at a time. You will have to setup OBDWiz, make 2 User Defined PID's and make a custom dashboard. To do that use the video with instructions below. I found that ECU 7E8 was the left throttle body and ECU 7E9 was the right.

Left Intake Manifold Pressure
Left Intake User Defined PID.JPG
Right Intake Manifold Pressure
Right Intake User Defined PID.JPG
From here you should be ready to balance your throttle bodies. I have been able to read the diagnostic codes on the ECU's also. I haven't tried clearing any codes due to my bike being under warranty and I don't want the dealer to know I have connected a PC.

Please see below for a few other useful User Defined PID's, Cylinder Head Temperature PID's and Intake Air Temperature.

Right Cylinder Head Temp

Left Intake Air Temp

Right Intake Air Temp

I hope this helps all EFI Urals riders. I know its a lot of information and hope its clear enough to understand. Good luck to all and don't hesitate to ask any questions. And yes I know I am reading Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure and not vacuum, but I believe its just a standard PID name and is actually vacuum.

I can make the adapter cable and ship them to you if you would like, but all the information is here to make your own. Good luck to all and don't hesitate to ask any questions.

I used "OBDLink SX Scan Tool" cable from Scantool.net
Is this the item that you used?
https://www.scantool.net/obdlink-sx/
sx_top_web.png
It appears to be more than a simple cable. It appears to be a code-reading adapter in and of itself.

I've got everything on order. I'll set it up and test it out. If everything works, then I will definitely post a video on everything from building the cable to setting up the reader to operating it.

Darrell, did you order the adapter I posted above? I want to pull the trigger on this order, but I want confirmation before I do so.

Yes, the "OBDLink SX Scan Tool" is the one I used. It will come with an activation code for the free version of OBDWiz, then you will have to buy the "Professional Add-On" upgrade.

Or you can get "OBDLink LX Bluetooth Scan Tool". It will also come with free activation code for OBDWiz. This will connect to a PC with Bluetooth capabilities and do all the same as the USB cable. It will also work with Android phones and work with the free OBDLink app. The app also has the User Defined PID capabilities. Plus if you have a handle bar phone mount you now can have a tachometer on your phone while driving. I have not tested this yet but will. Sorry IPhone users, think you are left out of this option.

https://www.scantool.net/obdlink-lxbt/

I will post a video when I get a chance. Yes it does work.

I wouldn't mind buying one of the J1962M "already cut" cables right from the Scantool website. They're cheap and they're, uh, already cut. Is the "uncut" end of this cable the end I need to plug in to the Scan Tool?

I did order that same model, but found one on ebay that was a little cheaper with free shipping.

The link goes to the male connector. You will need a female connector (maybe J1962F???)

The ODBII connector on the reader has the male connector on it already,

BTW - I also found a pigtailed female connector on ebay for cheap. Here is a link:

No, that cable looks like the wrong end is on it. You need the female end on the cable. Look under the steering wheel in your car. That's what the end of the adapter cable needs to be.
