Hayes Bleeder Mania - DONE!!

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Got an e-mail from Jon at Heindl. Rebuild kit is on its way. My THNX to them for putting up with me and great service again.

DGR a week away. I'll rebuild the caliper when I get the kit. No need to do a review. There's one on U-Tube. I'm not going to install it untill after the DGR. I also like to bench test it first. Not quite sure how to go about it yet but I'm sure I can figure something out.

Kit Came today, GAH!!!! No slider tubes. Evidently they're a separate kit. Some on the way from Heindl's. THNX guys.

Now the carp. Why not put a new set of tubes in the kit. It was around $100 delivered anyway. I has the o-rings for them included. And, WTF's with the instruction sheet. It tells you how to clean the brakes on the bike; how to replace the brake pads; how to bleed the brakes (nothing about the hanging caliper act); and how to adjust the parking brake. And what about the unmarked different sized o-rings?

Here's the kit. Note the small o-ring at the top tight. More on that later. Note the lube pack. Also, more on that later.

The instructions.
P5170048.JPG
Later - The smaller o-ring on the left. My guess is that this is the one for the parking brake screw. The other four are larger and are the same size as my slider tube o-ring seals. Smaller o-ring: .8125: OD x .1055"tk. Larger o-ring: .880"OD x .1075"tk (averaged from all four).
P5170049.JPG
MAX IMPORTANT LATER - The lube pack contents. The lube used on the seals, o-rings, and boots that are internal to the caliper is DOT grade specific. There's one type only for 3,4, 5.1 (glycols) and another type only for 5 (silicones). They are not interchangeable. Mixing them up will contaminate your brake fluid and quickly ruin the seals leading to brake failure. DO NOT USE COMMON CALIPER LUBE. Using common caliper lube will contaminate your brake fluid and destroy your seals just as quickly as using the wrong grease. Common caliper lube is only for areas that won't come in contact with brake fluid.

Installed and bled on bike. Brakes fine. as anticipated. Level to floor as mounted.
P5200052.JPG

Here's the fly in the ointment. Feed line along swing arm is not level. It's canted away from the caliper. A bubble in here will still require getting the line to go uphill into the caliper. BUT - the bleeder in the top makes this a whole lot more comfortable. The red thing under the level is a no-bleed hydraulic disconnect made for brakes. I installed it so I could remove and set aside the caliper if I was working on the rear wheel. It requires new brake lines and several ss3AN fittings.

Was it worth the effort. I think so. I could have saved myself around $120 by carefully removing and reusing the seals. And a couple of more bucks by reusing the slider tubes. I decided to spend the time and $$ so I have an essentially brand new caliper.

Chad, bleed the caliper while the bike is parked facing downhill. Problem solved.

 How many degrees downhill? URAL not built for downhill dog.

Still won't cure the bleeder placement problem. Maybe bleed in Tardis?
