Third Gear for the First Time!

My wife went out on her Ural Patrol I've been working on today. She's been staying in the yard and on the farm but today we went over to a road that runs behind your house that is mostly dirt. We went about 2 miles down the dirt part and came back. When we reached the pavement she was confident enough to get up to 30mph in 3rd gear.

Small steps. I'm proud of her! If I can get the new tires on this weekend we'll be ready to head out to some more open road and work on getting up to speed. She's working the gears like a pro now!

Progress is progress. Went out again for about 12 miles this time. She followed me and we reached 45mph at one point. When we got back I asked how she liked 4th gear... "Fourth? Oh I didn't go to fourth, I stayed in 3rd". :?

So she still hasn't made it past 3rd gear. :P

Back to the parking lot! She's doing pretty good but I think "Ural speed" may continue to be a challenge for a bit longer. :moto:

I don't shift into 4th until I'm pass 50mph,,,,unless I am using it as "like overdrive" on a 35-40mph back road.... I find (and heard) that these motors should be winded up.. Just my $.02,,,worth about a $.005

On level runs I tend up up-shift to 4th round about 40 to 45 mph when that's the speed I'll be running (i.e. 45mph speed limit) and stay there for long periods. I find it more enjoyable than listening to it scream in 3rd mile after mile, if I have to slow down, back to 3rd. When I'm going past that I generally shift from 3rd to 4th round about 50 mph and keep accelerating.

I agree, these engines don't like to run slow and she didn't harm it by any means, I was just expecting she would shift to 4th about 45mph and stay there to cruise.

More to come! :lurker:

Yep, rev the poo out them, just be mindful there is a redline up there between 5200 and 5600 (have seen both numbers in writing, not pixels, in too many places to even attempt a guess which is right.). Having a tach helps, more to keep from lugging the motor than anything. I keep the revs below 4500 most of the time and only approach 5000 when riding with extreme exuberance. Saying that, this is also how I found out my motor's front bearing (carrier actually, bearings were all the right size) was too tight, twice, in the 1st 10K KM...glad that got sorted under warranty...thank you Sergie up in Redmond! Very close to 80K now and rode her to Key West (2K mile round trip, mostly I75, Tamiami trail and US1) last weekend, guess I am treating the engine correctly... She's being cautious, that is a good thing. Cautious is less expensive than the emergency room.
