North to Alaska

Post by whojigger » Sat Dec 27, 2014 4:51 pm

OK, its getting down to the wire. My friend Dillon Simon is 4 days away from showing up for the ride. Ferry tickets to Haines are paid for and I'm finishing up on deep freeze modifications. Electric gear works, 0-40 oil bought, cable lube and special Lucas oil brake fluid arrived, finishing putting studs in 307s, crankcase vent modified. We will keep you informed right here, with pictures when we get near an internet connection. Only -21 in Bruwash Landing and sunny.

Have a great trip. I'll be watching here for sure. I hope when I retire in a couple years I still have some of what it takes left in me to do trips like the one you are getting ready to do. Haven't done a "test yourself and machine" trip in about four years and I am getting really anxious to do another.

My hat is off to you for even considering this one, much less actually doing it. Good Luck!

Here are pictures of my Alaska trip this past August. Certainly the views will be different on your trip as the temperatures will be about 50+ degrees colder for you.

Have a great trip!

Great pictures! I've made the run from Prince Rupert up to Whitehorse then down to Tok over to Fairbanks down to Anchorage and back home via the ferry in Haines and recognize many of the places in the photos. Once again I set out alone, well with a monkey but no support vehicle/buddy. We'll see how prepared we are and with Simon in the hack, we should get plenty of pictures. It's getting real close to D-Day. Next time you come to Alaska, stop in at Ketchikan and I'll show you some hospitality, a shower and a front room to camp in. Must give me some warning so I can come to town and sell fish and visit.

Thanks for the invite to Ketchikan! I have a number of relatives there. Dr. Clark Davis the chiropractor. David Davis a contractor. My grandpa, grandpa, aunt & uncle had the oldest trolling license in Alaska for years.
I have never visited, but will let you know if/when I do.
Best luck on the trip!!!

If you decide to go let me know. I lived there for seven years and would love to ride my Rig up for a visit as I am sure it has changed a lot in the last 16 years. If we could arrange a ride up, I could meet you in WA and we could go up from there.

whojigger, do you know Pat Moore and the Notorious Teddy Brown? They owned and operated the gift store and museum out at Totem Bight Park when I knew them. They didn't live in town, had their own little island and would commute to town by float plane or boat. If you do happen to know them, please say hello for me. My name is Mark Hopkins and I think about them often.

Of course I know of them, my daughter worked fleecing the tourists at their little shop at Totem bite while in college. And by the way, Clark Davis is my chiropractor, been trying to hook him on getting a troll license and start fishing to get rid of all that extra cash he has. Ketchikan hasn't changed much, a few bars closed, the pulp mill closed, and downtown boards up when the last cruise ship leaves. POW island now has over 200 miles of paved road and thousands of FS roads just made for Urals.

Yep, the Focsile, the Marine Bar (naked lady bar affectionately known as the Marbar), Steamers, and the bar in Ward Cove are gone. KJ's Raven Roost was sold and now called the Asylum, and worst of all, The Arctic (Home of the Happy Bears) is temporarily closed as they replace the pilings under it; be open again this Spring. In their place we got a metrosexual bar called Fat Stan's, a tourist bar on the docks, and 2 sports bars. The Sourdough is still the fisherman's bar, and the 49er is what's left of a logger bar now. 3 churches closed their doors so I guess its about a fair trade.

Thas funny. I'm an ex-troller from Pelican. I bailed out back in 93/94. Just couldn't afford it anymore. :(
Sounds like a fun trip whoj. If my old bones and circulatory (heating) system hold out and play nice a winter run to Yellowknife is on the bucket list.
Have fun.
