I was born in Monterey and assigned to Fort Ord as a rifle company commander. A golfer’s heaven, a racing enthusiast’s paradise and a great place to ride a motorcycle. Almost got relieved of command when my XO decided he would fly a rented airplane under the Bixby Creek bridge; once under the cable and once over it. Problem arose when a passing motorist got and reported his tail number. I was on the bridge taking pictures.
You know I remember that incident, back in the late sixties or early seventies, on the KSBW news.
My event was in early 1980. I was at Ord from Sept 1979 - July 82.

It is hard to imagine but almost the whole route that we rode thirteen days ago has been burnt or is in danger of being burned. Cal fire calls the two fires, the River, and the Carmel were started by lighting. Eleven members of my family, four households who live in those hills, have been evacuated. They may not have homes to come home to when this is over. The fires are less than 10% controlled. My nephew and his brood, my sister, brother and sister in-law and my sister's ex's family have all evacuated. My brother and his wife both recently retired have spent the past three years completely remodeling their home. Michelle’s family’s original homestead built by her father.

When we were growing up in this area, sixty-seventy years ago fire were never a thing as they have become to be, You can't ignore Global Warming, because it has ways of reminding you it's here and not going away.

I realize now from my earlier post in this thread we were rousted from Carmel Beach not just because you can't sleep/camp there but they were looking for deserters or a deserter from Fort Ord. That's why they asked for our draft cards (I was 16 so didn't have one (yet). Forgot that base was nearby.

Passing thru Big Sur a forest fire was started by someone with an out-of-control campfire. Not like now with the crazy lightening strikes.

Prayers to those in CA, terrible fires.

We have just been notified we are in the evacuation alert zone. This fire started a week ago fourty miles to the north of us. We are packing some bags and getting ready if it should come to that. No hanging around for us. The fire area is from Fort Ord to Ft. Hunters Ligget to the Jolon Rd.

Good Luck and stay safe. I was involved in putting out a fire years ago that was only about 40 acres, I can not even imagine one like you all are dealing with.

Very kind of you to offer, Tim, but I have plenty of family in the area, so I have it well covered. Thank you, Tim.
