Cold weather monkey

Post by Bendog02760 » Wed Dec 05, 2018 4:22 pm

Balmy 23 degrees when we went out this morning so it was time for the cold weather wrap and head scarf for my monkey! Anybody have cold weather gear ideas for their monkeys?? We slow it down and bundle up and neither of us like windshields so that option is out.

They make 12v electric blankets and heated vests, kind of pricey but oh what a difference in cold weather!
You'd have to figure out how to keep it on the dog and make sure it didn't get too hot, I don't know if this is the kind of thing you're thinking of but it's a starting point.Maybe you could even find one in a hounds tooth pattern!

Might check your local pet store or fav pet web site. This time of year they probably have sweater and coat options. Prolly even knit booties.

12V blanket and the Pup knows exactly where to go to stay out of the wind, head poking out ever once and awhile to make sure we are on-course.
As with you we have no need or want for bike or sidecar windshields. If we need one we'll climb into the Jeep or car.

I use a system of layers so I can keep my monkeys warm through the changing seasons.
Bottom layer I use: https://ruffwear.com/collections/winter ... nie-jacket
Outer Layer: https://www.hurtta.com/global_en/extreme-warmer
Rain Layer: https://www.hurtta.com/global_en/downpour-suit

With both layers on we've gone on rides as low 38F with no problems so far. Needs to get colder to test farther. The outer coat even has a head scarf that will keep him covered at full speed. The rain gear does a great job protecting the front as they like to stand or sit up. My only gripe is that I wish that the coat was waterproof instead of water resistant, but the rain gear does a great job at that.

Thanks for the response. That extreme weather jacket Ajax mentioned may be a good option. She wears a vest but that doesn’t protect her chest thoroughly, probably ok to 40ish degrees.I wrap her in the orange jacket when below 40 degrees which offers decent protection and now I’ve added the grey headwrap to keep her comfortable. May look into the blanket Tom and Stagewex mentioned too. Thanks gents.

On a side note there are 12v pet heating pads avail. Be easy to put on the seat and when the dog gets cold all he has to do is lay down. Gets too warm, stand up into the wind. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Although my dog would walk through fire to be with me, I won't put anyone I love at risk motorcycling. I take my own risks, do my own stunts - but that is all.

Thanks Rivers, our second winter riding and with the windchill in the teens I want to take every precaution to keep her comfortable. With that said I had a 2 hr ride to the VA yesterday morning and it was cold when we saddled up. I planned on taking the hellcat which is LOUD but she was waiting patiently by the GU shed. Everything has risks but I followed her lead; we hiked, had lunch together, visited a friends monument and went to a couple stores together and enjoyed a cold but fun day. I’m going to add the heating pad and she adapted quickly to her new head wrap but we enjoyed another 60 km today.

You guys might be doing a lot more riding with your Pups than I do. I'm just an around the town/country dog chauffeur.

The "Camco" listed as "Amazon Choice" is the one I have but in black & white plaid. There are better ones but if I need something warmer for the dog she's staying in.

With the extreme warmer I can pull the neck scarf up to their RexSpecs and keeps their necks and ears warm. Depending on how they stand they can get some wind through the front but I usually have another layer under the extreme warmer. I top it off with a custom heated seat.

Good advice, thanks. Although we still ride in the cold we increase our break time and I keep a close eye on her. I only ride my GU with her.
