Work horse GU

Post by Bendog02760 » Fri Sep 07, 2018 2:01 pm

On a recent ride I was thinking how I read about people tooling around at 65mph+ on their rigs. My 2012 with me and my riding partner barely can squeak out 55 on our best day. But it’s obviously not about speed so I thought the little horse in the background summed up my ride. It’s still a tough machine and handled us and 225 pounds of fertilizer today. It’s been two great years in my GU thanks to some knowledge I learned here.

after having logged 18K km on my '16 gear up, it is insane to attempt sustained speeds of 60+ mph on a ural, IMHO. but Ural does not help. from https://www.imz-ural.com/gear-up-sportsman/ "Our bikes are happy cruising between 65 and 75 mph."

no, no they're not.

but it is a good way to wear them out and use them up unnecessarily early.

Hmmm, ride mine (Retro and M70, both flat land gearing. No longer offered by factory.) down the slab at highway speed all the time, and take to forest service roads and abuse them. When M70 had standard gearing (changed by dealer after 1st trip), could fly down the highway, manual says it can, she did not like it. Nope, not one bit. 65 was a good top speed for that combo.
Sportsman, uh, no, even with a BMW engine. But she's dragged more than one tree out of the back yard! Best tractor I've ever had. It's in how they are geared. 60 is a top speed for the 2 wheel drive set...IMHO.

Glad your GU is treating so well and great-looking pooch.

I always say while a Ural will do 65 mph, it won’t do it for long... They are happiest at 50-60 mph.

First great looking rig (and dog)! Mines new, it seems happy at 45-50mph, but when I got it I cycled through the speedometer screens and some intrepid soul had it up to 64mph during a test ride I would guess. Good for them, I have no need to exceed 55. :-o

I like the "work horse" designation. Think morgan rather than quarter horse. ;) My Ural I consider a utility rig to be used for whatever I need it for. Some day when I get younger, better looking and I win the lottery I'd love to have a pretty tutone 650 deco for them fabled date nights. :o
Though I don't get the "barely can squeak out 55" thing? Your 012 should easily obtain 55mph in tune and on flat ground? Maybe time to do a full tune-up?

I think BigJames hit it on the head. It’s a two wheel drive carb machine with knobby k37 tires and I’m 6’3, 240 pounds with a 85 monkey. The few times I was alone I might have hit 60mph but the reality is my partner enjoys 50 ish and the bike hums along at that speed. I like to use and not abuse any tool or machine I own and so far I’ve treated my GU well and it’s treated me the same. We never are in a rush but I’m guessing a newer fuel injected CT with road tires would be significantly faster than my GU. I’ve enjoyed the GU much more than I ever thought I would. :beerchug:

I am drinking the same coolaid. :)

At 45mph i have just enough ooomph to shift into 4th. Bike seems real happy at 55mph, revs not high. Seems like it could do 60mph with more leftover but 55 is ok with me. Me on the other hand dont care for the wind buffeting.

And im really likin the safety straps for the co-pilot!

Btw, how do you like that high mount exhaust? Was it worth the money? Im thinkin about adding the same one to mine.

How many km on it now? When I was breaking in, 45 in 3rd felt like I was over-revving it. So I usually changed up at 40. Still do usually. It all works much better when it's broken in. I've seen it down to 35 and below, and still able to pull 4th.

I like the look of the exhaust Happytrails and it’s definitely come in handy when off pavement as far as ground clearance. My co-pilot is always with me and although she’s got her ear protection on I’m glad it’s left side since it’s less intrusive for her. The quality of the exhaust which is manufactured by Raceway is excellent.

Im at 11,000 km Mr. Wazzock and I’d say mine is similar as far as gearing. I feel at 45 mph I’m pushing it if in 3rd. 4th gear for me is between 40-55, maybe push 60 on a good day and alone. The bottom line is I’m never rushing around on my GU and just enjoying the breeze with my monkey. Any day I have her next to me is a good day, hard not to love this look.

Thats a happy face :)

So thats a 2 into 1 going to the left side? First time i seen one. Makes a lot of sense. I been looking at 2 into 2s but i really liking your setup. How much did it cost?

Most of my bike knowledge is from HD’s but I’m sure it’s the same, you get the best performance out of 2 into 1 exhaust. My bike came with it installed, it had only 750 km. when it came to me. I am impressed with the overall quality but it is expensive. I love the sound of the peashooter exhaust but also costly!!

Lotta time off pavement today, trails through forest in September are just incredible....I think if my monkey could talk she’d say it was a good day!! She can’t talk but she communicated her assessment....

The 2into1 most likely isn't helping and you may want to open up the exhaust valves 1 or 2 thousands.
My GU will still do 65 but doesn't like it, very happy at 40mph :)
