Enfields have, or at least had, a pretty vast domestic market in their home country, so that the overheads of R&D, production, distribution, marketing, running a company etc. are spread over a much larger production volume, and far lower on a bike-per-bike basis. Even though Enfield now has a lot more domestic competition in its home market, it's still vast market. Ural's home market disappeared 2 and a half decades ago, its a product that is only of interest to a narrow niche of those of us far away, and they're building things on a scale that is small enough (if I remember correctly, not more than about 1,500 total annual production in a strong year), for a global operation, that it borders on custom.

Do I wish Urals cost less? yes. Do I wish they had fewer bugs? yes. 'Cause if they did, they'd sell more and boost likelihood that they'll stay around.

Am I glad that we can get them at all, and that there is still a company behind them? Hell yes!
IMZ published 2013 sales statistics a couple of years back. Here they are;

1206 motorcycles left the Ural factory in 2013. 1151 (95%) of them were exported. 98% of the production were sidecar bikes, and only 2% - solos

604 motorcycles were sold retail in the US. US is the largest market for Ural motorcycles, followed by Germany, France, Canada and Australia

428 or 71% of total US sales were 2WD models (Gear Up, Patrol, Patrol T), with Gear Ups making up for almost half of the total sales. Ural T was the third most popular model with 77 bikes sold in the US in 2013.

Just so everyone on this forum knows. This is Robby and I will be purchasing Raceway Ural from Frank. Frank bought Raceway just to help Jim out because we knew Jim didn't have a long time left. Frank was already RETIRED when he purchased this Business. He was not looking to own it for ever. I am in a place now where I can buy it and keep the name Raceway Ural alive and running for a long time to come. If you have problems with Raceway Please send me a Private message and I will do my best to help you out in anyway that I can.

Thanks Robby@Raceway

Never had any problems with Raceway; purchased several of their products and always received good service. Happy to hear you are taking it over!

I'm on Robby's side. I received an exceptional PM from him based on one of my previous posts in this thread. We had a misunderstanding that has been resolved. Best of luck and I will remain a customer and ask that SS members do also.

IIRC, EFI and Disc Brakes were added because of EU regulations, not just for USA. A byproduct is being able to meet USA EPA regs, but the change was mandated by the EU requirement that everything have EFI & Disc Brakes.

YMMV
