My first Ural?

Post by Carlos Murphy » Fri Sep 18, 2020 11:30 pm

Hello,
There is a 2018 Ural Gear Up 2WD for sale near me, asking price is $13,500.00 and has 1300 miles on it.
I'm an old motorcycle guy but this would be my first "foreign" bike outside of my 1971 Norton 750 Commando.
Anything I should be aware of before purchase?
I have been studying tons of info on youtube on this bike that is VERY informative and enjoyable to watch.

Thank you very much.

Like any used car/bike/boat/etc it's up to you to do a inspection and know what you are looking for in the history of the rig & the sellers maint, the way it was kept. Nothing special or mystifying about that. As mentioned list your location in your signature and perhaps someone who actually owns one can go check it out with you.
Personally I'd try and see a few Urals before settling on perhaps the only one you've ever seen.
13,000 miles on a 2018 is a good sign it's been used well in the last 2+ years. That's a good sign.

If you yourself did your own work on a Norton (any year) you should be more than adept at a Ural. Tinker-Toys compared.
Assuming you have not piloted a sidecar rig yet?
Good Luck with you search

Still, 1300 miles sounds WAY better than some Urals I see for sale, with, like, 160 miles. Wonder what happens with those? Guy takes it out, scares himself half to death, parks it?

I think some folks are enchanted and seduced by the looks then find out what an onary and cantankerous beast they can be

I think my introduction, then, was much more satisfactory, because I was GIVEN a complete (but horribly rusty and in despicable condition) Gear Up by a friend. So after a winter and spring of total nut-and-bolt disassembly, repair, paint work, and reassembly, I HAD to take it out and learn to drive it. After spending hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars bringing it back to life, quitting was not an option.

Then I bought a new one, and it is better. I love it. Not nearly so "onary and cantankerous". :D

Just me, but I would never buy a low-mileage/kilometer Ural. You want one that’s been used enough that any problems or manufacturing flaws will have revealed themselves and been addressed under warranty.

YMMV, but I stick to new or used rigs with at least 5,000 and preferably 10,000 klicks.

The beast is like a unridden mustang. Some guys complain they can't lean into a turn. Some can lean in both left and right hand turns. In a left hand turn some do a pusher wheeley.

I have bought low mileage Urals 1999 BC solo - 47 km, 2007 GearUp - 32 km, 2002 BC - 445 with no engine/gearbox, 1999 Deco Classic - 4000km. All of those were in not running state, sorted out. Proved to be brand new, shiny, good bikes.

Only the 2014 M70 was in good running condition with 12000 km.
