Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
And if you ever need front brake parts, that's A Dnepr TLS set up. Probably off an MT10 but they are all the same. Ural shoes won't fit.
Neval BMW/MT11 800cc hybrid, Neval 2wd MT10-36, Neval standard MT10-36, Neval MT16, another MT11, BMW/MB650 hybrid , K750m , MB750 and a standard MT10-36 outfit + 2 large sheds full of spares for them.
Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
You legend !!! .... I had wondered, but I wasn't sure. I have been toying with possible changes to the front brake ..... she will (eventually) get an m72 front end and I like the idea of a TLS setup ....sooo some modding will be a must !
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
This week's update ....
I took the plunge and bought some Chinese copy K302 carbs for the beastie
..... they arrived today and as I have a day off I began work on them
On first inspection the quality is good ... the washers are appalling though , too plastic and too hard, not like the original fibre or rubber washers. But the measurements seem identical to the originals and they are well cast. I'm actually impressed
So ... this is them stripped down and laid out next to an original.
As you can see the needle screws on the original were "special" .... and boy were those old carbs dirty !!!

Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
From past experience I first ground the float needles into their seats .... just using a slow drill in forward and reverse with a bit of fine grinding paste. Then I replaced the washers with better ones.
So.... got them all cleaned out and lubed the slides with very light oil and fitted them.
Filled with fuel and guess what .... NO LEAKS !!!!
Next up I tried starting her up .... I set the idles equally and visually synced the throttle slides and stops ..... key in, first kick...nothing.....second kick and she fired up
The idle is super smooth ..... a tad fast, but only a little (and I haven't adjusted anything yet) , throttle response is nice, also smooth and revs well.
So my impression is that for £60 for the pair with some better washers from a cheap multipack and a thorough inspection they are a winner. I have yet to run it through all speeds and as the bike isnt driving I can't actually check the real world performance.... but I'm really happy with them.
If your wondering about buying a set, just do it !!!

Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
I´d like to advise to wipe the oil off the slides. They´ve got to go dry or they will collect a lot of dirt and bind. Yes, cleaning them with light oil is o.k to preserve them, but excess oil has to be wiped off.
My experience.

Thank Claus !!!
Yep, I've just used a very light spray oil.... then wiped them down.
Seems good so far.

Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
Not much work done today .... I cleaned the points and regapped them, fitted a very very cheap 6v 4ah gel battery and cleaned and rewired the ignition switch (which has been a bit intermittent since I bought it).
The result is a whopping great spark at the plugs .... I'm delighted !!!
I really need to sort out my fuel hoses and then do a propper running session to adjust the new carbs and also do the electronic checks on the charging system.

Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
Still waiting on delivery of my fuel hoses and I'll be working away from tomorrow til after Christmas so no proper running tests til after then .... however ...
Did a brief test of the G414 (L414,T414) Dynamo running at idle and fast idle and she is putting out around 7.5v at fast idle ..... (7.49v to be exact and it's nice and steady. Drops to about 7.3v at a slower idle. That seems pretty healthy to me.... so yay
Another step forward .... just waiting for the usual 2 steps back now

Those look pretty sweet!
I might have to get a set for my '59 M-72M.
They kinda wore off...

Re: Hello from a new IMZ M61 owner.
My latest update:
I got a very cheap Borescope for christmas for Christmas (which we celebrated on Saturday as I've been working shifts).... it has proved quite useful. I got a good look inside the engine casing at the crank and into the cylinders too. Interesting to do without needing to take the heads off. The bores seem ok .... not great, but no major wear or scoring. The crank is clean overall but there is signs of light corrosion from her being stood up for a long time.
Other than this messing about I've not had time for much else. I have ordered some form gaiters which I'm gonna adapt from an old BSA part to work on my slightly custom front end. I'll show pics of my idea when they arrive. I'm afraid the next purchases are gonna have to be wheel and headstock bearings ..... boring but necessary.
So ... as usual, family, work and other day to day things are stopping me really sinking my teeth into the project yet.

Had I stayed in Texas after my last Iraq trip in 2007, it would've been finished by the end of 2008.

Ran when parked, no doubt.

(The Arabic date painted on the tires when last changed was 1968, so it had been parked for almost 40 years when I found it.)
