Helli vs cigarette lighter port

Post by Mikey » Tue Jan 16, 2018 11:11 am

Hi guys. When I was first looking at my GearUp on the showroom, the shop said they will throw in an adaptor for the power outlet to make it a cig lighter port. I didn't think much about it even after delivery then realized I didn't have it. So I went out to see and the plug wasn't a helli, but the sub for a lighter port fit in fine.

So, when and where did they send North American style 12v port instead of the EUROPEAN style?

I don't really understand your question, but, to my knowledge, the Ural power panels have always come with Powerlet-sized electrical ports. Same with BMWs and other European brands. Powerlet-to-SAE and Powerlet-to-cigarette adaptors are readily available online.

Didn't know they changed. Too bad cause the DIN/Euro/BMW type is a much better system.

OH! He's saying that his '17 has a cigarette lighter port instead of a Powerlet. I see. I know a couple of folks with '17s. I'm gonna have to ask them what size power port is installed on their rigs.

Yes Chad, you've got it. I'm going to go make sure that they didn't wire an adaptor in and have confused me thinking it was original.

I have a 17 gear up. It has a Euro type outlet. I have an SAE adapter.

This is what mine looks like. Think the dealer just swapped out the port?Image

Got my '17 Gear Up in March of '17. It came with a Powerlet style 12V outlet installed in the sidecar. I can use it to charge all my USB devices, with just a few simple adapters. And unlike cigarette lighter plugs, these simply will not come inadvertently unplugged. It's a much better design.

What one might call a dealer ' downgrade' ! The original Euro accessory socket is far more reliable and practical for motorcycle use.

Concur. Cigarette lighter electrical plugs have only three points of contact:

Whereas the Powerlet plugs have negative terminal around the circumference of the plug, giving MUCH greater electrical contact:

Agree and even that is bigger than needed.

I can go along with that. On my main bike I have a usb/cigarette lighter socket on the top left hand frame rail, a euro socket fitted to a side panel, a flylead with 5mm jack socket ( for my Gerbing heated gear) under the seat and 2 more 5mm jack sockets fitted to the instrument console for anything I want to mount onto the handlebars or if I only want to wear my gloves. Only the USB is not ignition switched.

5mm jacks are much neater all round but they can be a pig to solder up.

Just M2C, never had any problem with 'em and been using 'em for years. Need to be clean tho, for good electrical contact.

As for 'falling out', nope never happened BUT if necessary will pull out cleanly if e.g. cable is snatched wihout breaking itself the wire or the socket.

But in the past I have also used 1/4" jack plugs, but nowadays things like USB charger adapters are built for cigar lighter sockets. So I seem to be back to cigar lighter sockets again.
