VIN HELP!!!!!

Post by BomberEOD » Thu Sep 21, 2017 10:37 am

Comrades;

Last Friday I purchased a 1960 BMW with sidecar VIN Number "2936342" (on the title and engine).. Took the bike to the nearest BMW shop and was immediately informed that the bike is NOT a BMW but a "Ural Patrol".

Any identifying information would be greatly appreciated. The speedometer and Key both have Cyrillic characters. Bike has electric and kick start.

:o
Buyer beware.

I don't know how to respond to this. Is this serious? Is it a joke? Are you trolling us? I'd think the Cyrillic characters would've been a dead giveaway of the bike's Soviet heritage. Got any pictures of it you can share?

I didn't know Urals had electric start in 1960.

I do know that BMW's did not have electric start until 1970 although you could by a '69 (I own a 1969 /2) with 12 volt as an option.
Obviously got scammed but post some pix of what you say might be a 1960 Ural. Maybe worth something?
They were not called "Patrol's" back then either.

At least it's nice looking. Price is not hideous. Disappointing if they wanted a BMW.But wouldn't the ownership indicate manufacturer and thus provide the warning at time of purchase?

It is a Dnepr with BMW power plant.
Not a gear up or patrol Ural!

Thanks for your responses all...
WOW... what I can see is that I either paid only $500.00 too much, or underpaid by a varying amount.

As you can tell from the photos, I am missing an air box, bike is currently receiving a full service (all fluids, gaskets, valves etc), air box, tire trueing (excessive front end low speed wobble) and minor electrical.... Anyone with info on where I can submit for VIN decoding, please let me know. I will check the front tubes to verify the VIN when it returns from the shop.... Once again, thank you all.

Your bike shop representative is talking through his bottom.

You have been conned and taken in by the badging and title but, to be honest, you may have paid a little too much for it but I don't think you have come out of it as stung as you think. Personally I would have an issue with the vendor and try to get some money refunded due to the misrepresentation of the bike

Don't make waves over the title and enjoy it. If it is a well sorted one, it will be a pleasure to own.

The bike is actually a Dnepr MT11 from round the early 1990s. If your dealer thinks it is a Ural , DO NOT LET THEM SERVICE IT apart from the engine. Your bike has different fluid requirements than a Ural , especially the gearbox. They could cause untold damage by under filling it.

Manuals and parts lists are available free online and parts are much cheaper than you would pay for the equivalent Bavarion Money Waster bits.

Please, let us know how you get on, there is plenty of good advice on here.

Thank you very much for the info.

Item was purchased from a private individual who is VERY concerned that the bike is not a BMW.. He will, if applicable provide some kind of financial relief if indicated by current prices.
