Hello From Wichita Kansas!

I'm new to Urals but have driven a a sidecar CJ750 BMW clone at some WWII reenactments so not entirely new. I also enjoy older Honda twins and have a small collection of small displacement Hondas; S90, CM91 and Honda 70 passports.

The problem is that everytime I go to ride my 5 and 3-year-old want to go with me, so naturally this brings me to purchasing a sidecar rig.

I am able to choose between two available units, one being a '98 650 that runs but bogs on acceleration. The other is a 2002 750 Ural patrol. Prices fair and comparable for both, $3600 ea. I can't afford to buy both. It has crossed my mind lol. Which would you go for and why?

Leaning towards the 750 because it has the push button start and is slightly bigger, also only has about 1200 clicks and is a first owner vehicle. 650 tourist doesn't currently run down the road but did a few years ago and is much closer than the 2002.

I don't know a lot about early Urals but I think the 2002 were a transition year with some weird parts but I am sure someone much smarter than me will chime in,

Please update your signature line with the year and model of your bike when you purchase one, along with your general location. We have members all around the globe and this will give them context about what you write.

Also, please be aware that the search feature can be a helpful tool, so please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. There's a LOT of good-to-know information on this forum.

Finally, we love to ogle bike pics, so don't be shy about posting them. I'm told they're worth a thousand or so words, when trying to articulate an issue you're having with your bike. The caveat is that they must be around 1 megabyte in size. If your smartphone or computer doesn't have the capability to shrink your pics, then you can use a multitude of free photo resizing websites to do the job.

Regarding your question, I generally recommend avoiding the early 750cc models, since their engines are an odd combination of legacy 650cc and new 750cc components, but if it runs well, I would probably choose it over the poor running kick-start-only 650.

Go newer if you are limiting yourself to only those two (2) bikes.
Or wait and be patient for at least a 2006 and up.

Good chance either of those bikes could sour you on Urals. Best to hold out for a later 750 methinks.
