What is Correct Way to Check Oil/Gear Dipstick Level?

Post by JackReno » Thu Jun 23, 2022 12:59 pm

I just changed all my 1st engine and gear oils on 2021 Ural, do you twist in all the way down on the dipstick for correct reading on not twist in for a reading on dipsticks?

The way I have the levels now it reads at top line of dipstick twisted all the way down and at the low reading not twisting down the dipsticks.

For the life of me I can't remember which is correct.

Ural has a good how-to series of videos, including the answer to your question.

OK Thanks, so screw it all the way down for proper level check, then I was right how I did it.

No. Go back to the video at 1:35

Do not screw the dipstick down. Just rest the first threads on the filler boss.

It depends. If it's the gear oil dipstick, you have to screw it all the way in. Since the subject line says "oil/gear dipstick level", that may be what the OP means.

Ural is nothing if not inconsistent on the oil level thing!

The FD is the one to watch as any overfill pukes out. Have to look where mine is but as I recall, very low on the stick even screwed in was a bit much.

Just checked, yes it is on he low mark and that is screwed in.

You can extend the vent.

Some of it probably has to do with how well the gears are set, tight means more heat and more expansion.

I just put in synthetic gear lube and its been fine, of course 30k down the line it could go South.

Yep learned to keep mine at the min level, bottom notch. :D

Also important, when checking level, also check for water contamination during winter / cold / wet weather (as the capacity is extremely small), if the oil is going dirty creamy colour, change it.
