Should I get a 2016 Ural?

Post by Bertness » Wed Sep 15, 2021 6:22 am

Hi guys and gals. Newbie here. Been following the forums for a couple months as I've been wanted a bike with a sidecar for years, and the wife finally 'approved' me getting another bike. A 2016 came up for sale somewhat close by. I want a good road bike to take the kids with (I got 4, but two are way to small for anything but riding on the farm). I may occasionally take it on some trails by us, but I really just want to be able to take a kid at a time on an excursion. Camping, light traveling that sort of thing. I'm not super comfortable with fixing things on the fly, however, I have done some small engine repair in my younger days. The bike on question is from a private seller. 2016 patrol with approximately 1600 miles on it. Should I be weary about getting a bike that has so low of miles? Any known issues with the 2016 models? I've only ever owned Japanese bikes, and have never had any issues with them.

Six Ural Rider’s in my local area own 2016 - 2018 rigs. None of them have ever had any issues. Take it for what it’s worth but they appear to be reliable good rigs

I have a 2010 but when I last considered upgrading to a fuel injected bike I was looking heavily at 2016's.
There are know known serious issues associated with the 2016 model year.
The quality of the bikes overall seems to improve a little with each year.

For example the 2016 is when they started using the new Taiwan starter motor that turns like a beast and ditched the old Ukrainian motor. As someone who upgraded form the old starter to the new, the difference is night and day.

In the end I decided that the gap between what my bike was worth and the cost to upgrade to get the improvements wasn't worth it for me, as I mainly use my bike for off-roading trips. But I would have no qualms about a 2016 model year.

You might want to look at the model year difference list, to see if there are any features that you want that a 2016 might not have.
It also instills a little confidence that they do try to improve the bikes where they can over the years.
I find Terry Crawford's list to be very useful and detailed...typical of his knowledge of the bikes and the great support he gives to the community.

A Ural is perfect for your intended use. Condition is everything. Low miles is common as so many buy then just don't use it much. Same with Harleys. Many folks like the idea of having one but riding--not so much. Lots of current model year Harleys with a few hundred miles.

Please don't be scared off by garbage you've read elsewhere. If that 2016 is in good shape, had had the 1st service, it should be fine. Everything on the bike except the FI and ignition is relentlessly analog and straight up wrench work to maintain or adjust.

Dealers like Mr Crawford or Heindls have been around and know the bikes and parts extremely well. They will go out of their way to help a Ural owner with info, advice and parts.

This board is comprised of many folks weird enough to love these things and a great source of information.

When you see how much your kids will love the sidecar it will all be worth it.

I don't know if he's coming back but I think I know the bike he was going to look at and I know it sold. Metal flake green 2016 Patrol with some add-on accessories. It was very nice and I seriously considered it myself but decided to see if I can find a 2019 or newer.
