2000 Ural in my driveway.

Post by timmythecop » Sun May 16, 2021 9:48 am

Hey yall. After owning a few hundred bikes, I finally found a Ural to buy. It is an actual barn find from a lovely couple who said they were too old to get it going. The vin indicates it was sold as a Solo and it has a both a side and centre stand. What gives? Although I have extensive sidecar experience, it was all on a police Electra Glide in my former life as a motor cop, I'll have plenty of questions for you.

Congrats and welcome to the group!

The 650's are great bikes, lots of information here on them.

Couple comments:
The stock front brake is squishy, there's a mod using a clutch cable and a different rod that makes a huge difference. Turns it into a real brake.

When looking for parts, Terry Crawford is the most reliable/ he'll sell you the correct parts: http://www.crawfordsales.info
You can buy 650 stuff on eBay and whatnot, but the US Import bike is very different from some of the 1960's Soviet domestic and while the parts may fit, they may not, or they'll require lots of modifications to get working.

Your 650 has a 5 piece pressed crank and the timing gears are of questionable quality. Be gentle with it and she'll be somewhat reliable. Go wide open throttle and try to drive over 60mph for extended periods, and you'll likely start to shred the gears/ twist the crank.

Right hand turns are spooky, practice in a parking lot and get a feel for when the chair comes off the ground.

Welcome aboard Tim.

That's not a Bavarian Classic, Tim.
The BC's came with the Retro-style headlight housing, like this...

As far as the kickstand, I think you answered your own question: it's a Ural Solo onto which a previous owner hung a hack.

It's a good looking rig. Just follow Eric's advice and take it easy on that 650cc engine.

It is my understanding, that if it was truly a Solo at one time, it has tall gears for a side car. Take care, it is easy to break the drive shaft.
Its a great looking bike. I have the same hub cap on my Retro. :D

OK. Solo it is. That explains the 2 stands. Did solos come with reverse and a parking brake? Or maybe that came later, with the chair....I dont even truely know if this is a 2000, as the title is being forwarded.

Take the bench off and see if you have this mounting plate under it. You should.

https://www.uralne.com/front-tractor-se ... ing-plate/

If you have that plate, a tractor seat with the seat mounting bracket will bolt right on.

https://live.uralcatalog.com/details/875

The tractor seat will stress with heavier riders. If you're over 200lbs, you may want to rethink the seat as metal will bend and cracks will form near welds. If you're under, you're good.

Thanks. That schematic helped. I either need parts 10 and 14 or make them myself. I do have the bridge plate attached.

Most dealers can get you the parts. AF1 is easy as they have most things on their site. Just type the part number in the search and a couple weeks later you have parts. This applies to universal parts that are still used. For 650 specific parts, you'll still want Terry Crawford. He's an excellent source for good condition used parts as well.

That is a CMSI (former exporter) Ural. Most of them use to come with solo stands. And solos had sidecar mounting points welded to their frames as well. I remember when CMSI was selling last 3-4 bikes they had left in stock on their website. Everything had clearance sale prices.

Some of leftover bikes may have had hacked at the exporter.

The 1999 Bavarian Classic solo I have bought had a gearbox with reverse, 3.89 final drive and sidecar mounting points.

The rest is just history... 4 previous Urals with telescopic front ends, BMW airheads, bigger Hondas, bigger sidecars...
