Reverse Shift Lever (? OEM)

Post by LVGS » Sat Jun 22, 2019 9:51 pm

I recently picked up this (NOS) reverse shift lever from our local dealership: https://www.ural-shop.com/en/acc-upgrad ... t-set.html.

Unfortunately, it did not come with any installation instructions and it is not readily apparent how or where the shift lever actually mounts.

There has been some passing reference to these in older posts but little in terms of mounting instructions.

Can anyone confirm that they are compatible with EFI bikes (the catalogue info indicates they are)?

Secondly, any ideas/advice/experience on how to mount the shift lever would be much appreciated.

Thanks, as always.

Right from the link you posted ...

With all necessary parts for perfect fit on Carburator-Bikes as well as for the new EFI-Engines.

There ya go ... as far as installation - looks pretty straight forward just following the pictures. Uses existing mounting points, and from there, adjust the length of the rod to the "sweet spot" for full travel without slop.

Worse comes to worse, I bet you could email the folk at ural shop if you wrench yourself into a corner ...

I have this on my 2015 Gear Up, EFI. I’ll post some photos later today.

From the photos it looks like it bolts up to the front sidecar brace. The heim joint end will require you to mod (flatten) both sides of the knob on the OEM shift lever before drilling it out. Be careful pulling the lever to work on it. Use a puller. Too much goosing it around and it can disengage from the internal shifter plate and lock up.

No need to mess with original lever comes with own lever straight swap, see second photo. What I like about this one is doesn't need taking tank off and messing with the ignition coils. Some people have broken things that way!

GH, mounting it on the sidecar brace appears like it will require modification to the shin guard and possibly a longer bolt. Will definitely use a puller, good advice.

Mr Wazzock, the kit did not come with its own lever. As I have a ‘18 GU without a lever, I bought one from the dealer and will need to modify as described by GH.

Pics will be very helpful.

As mentioned, pulling the gear levers can cause some problems if you're not careful and a puller is a good thing. I got a small one from the local Advance Auto for around $10 and ground down the ends so it fits nicely behind the lever.

And from what I can see, the top mount is a simple L bracket that uses the same mounting bolt as the sidecar brace. I'd think you could lose the original washer and the L bracket will fit right on using the original bolt.

As an afterthought you might want to add a leather or wave washer between the knob handle and the front mount. That way you can adjust the tension holding the knob handle in position.

I have an older raceway version that needed a stronger spring to stay in place.

FWIW - I used a drill press and a vise to flatten the OEM shifter knob. Put a round sanding drum in the drill press. Put the lever in a vise knob up. Put a straight edge guide on the drill press table and run the vise back and forth against the sanding drum. Reverse the shift lever in the vise and repeat.

Nice find sKiZo. Advanced Auto Part number is "Gear Puller W141". Listed on their site under performance tools.

As I recall, the kit came with a longer mounting bolt and a replacement reverse lever.
