650 custom air filter
I am mounting an older gas tank to a M66. The crossover nipples are making contact with the air filter. How do I overcome this problem? I figure taking off the stock part and shoving a 5 inch x 2 inch round automotive style filter into the hole and covering the top would be a solution. Perhaps the collective has a better idea

Re: 650 custom air filter
Some photos of what you have, and the area of interference might help produce some useful suggestions.
I recently built a snorkel with a remote air filter for driving through deep water with my GearUp, probably not exactly what you're looking for but you might use some modified version of it to suit your needs.
If your M66 has the round filter fitting made into the transmission case, fitting a dry paper filter there might be your best option.
I'll see if I can post some photos.
Happy trails,
Jaybird

Re: 650 custom air filter
Thank you for the suggestions Jaybird. I wondered if a vw bug type filter would work. I just don't want to bend or stress the pipe. Also having trouble locating frame vin numbers. Soon I will strip/blast the frame, any suggestions where to look? Numbers aren't on the neck.

Re: 650 custom air filter
I can't speak on 1974 Urals, but my 99's serial number is stamped on the frame's right front downtube (probably by the U.S. importer).

Re: 650 custom air filter
Good information Chad, my 13 also has a vin in the same location. Haven't registered the 94 so I never looked for the frame vin and it doesn't seem to have one either. I have out of state titles for both machines how they obtained titles without frame numbers is beyond me. Here's a photo of the M66 where the vin ought to be. What's the purpose of mysterious hacked off metal?

Not sure. Looks like where a sidecar support strut lug was once welded to the frame. What's the purpose of mysterious hacked off metal?
Regarding your VIN situation, since you have a valid title, but apparently no serial number on your bike, I would either take number stamps and hammer the title's VIN into the frame OR have some fancy adhesive-backed foil VIN plates made (which I did for my '99 to replace the crappy white "paper" VIN stickers when I sandblasted the frame. Plus, I find my design more aesthetically pleasing.).

Re: 650 custom air filter
Looks to me like it would be easier to modify the fuel tank nipples than change the air filter.
Maybe cut the nipples so only a short portion is below the tank and then solder some new bent pipes over the shortened nipples.
Best,
Jeff

Re: 650 custom air filter
You should be able to bend/manipulate the crossover tubes into a more favorable position by using a box end wrench as a lever.
New Jersey DMV doesn’t ask to see the VIN, or require a photo or pencil tracing for a straight title transfer and registration , does Nevada?
Happy trails,
Jaybird

Re: 650 custom air filter
On older models of this vintage the frame number will either be -
- stamped on the frame near the left rear shock tower
- and/or on the dataplate on the frame neck
- or, none at all (registered in Russia via engine number)
None will be stamped on the downtubes on this vintage.

Which one, the original Soviet oil bath air box, or the suggested VW replacement?Mr Wazzock wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2019 2:45 pmThat is one ugly filter box.4REICH wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2019 11:56 pmThank you for the suggestions Jaybird. The fuel injection plastic airbox like on your rig is not exactly a work of art either, but I suppose it is functional.
Perhaps you have a workable solution for the OP?

Re: 650 custom air filtering
From your pictures I cannot tell what tank you are using.
I have seen many M66s with that tranny/air box/filter and although a close fit, concerning the cross-overs, it works.
My suggestion would be to install some rubber grommets were the tank meets the frame mount points at the rear to gain the necessary clearance and see if that works.
Many Soviet motos had grommets/shock mounts at this location around 1 cm thick. No issue going larger, it will just tilt the tank a bit forward.

Re: 650 custom air filter
On my 1993 domestic model the VIN originally is stamped onto the left downtube, so are many domestic Urals I´ve seen. With homologating them to EU-standard, the VIN changed from 6 numbers to 17 numbers and went to the right downtube.
