When you're sellin', I'm buyin'......whenever it's my turn to buy, that is....
Start by buying the metal Ural fairing now so that you're ready when your QD mount is ready.

Getting the Fairing before the QD is ready for sale is an excellent plan. In fact, I've had my Ural for almost two months and the fairing is still on backorder. They must be in short supply.

Tomcatfixer and I both had the same “wear item” wear out way too quickly. I’ve redesigned a more wear resistant piece and it works on my bike. I’ll be sending one to Tomcatfixer to put on his bike to test. Worst case scenario the failure would cause a rattle, but no danger of losing the windshield.

The other day, I put my deposit down for a custom painted 2019 gear-up with fairing. I'm very interested in a quick mount for it. Please add me to the list.

We're curious to know about the order procedure and pricing methodology for custom paint orders, if you don't mind sharing this information. Thanks.

Geez, 5 pages and still no mounts. I don't have a hankerin' for a Ural fairing on my rig so I'm not complaining. I'm just busting chops a little. Besides, I'm not crazy about the look of the Ural fairing and I'm not much of a fairing guy anyway. But a true quick mount windshield would be of interest.

I took a quick look at the front end of my bike and can see how to make the mounts for a windshield. It would be based on an HD quick detach style. No sense reinventing the wheel, right? Basically a clamp on mount with a quick detach fitting just below the sheet metal on the forks. And the second mount would go under the top fork caps and be a right angle mount with another quick detach fitting on the vertical leg.

If I were going to do this, I'd select an HD windshield with mount width that would suit the width of the mounting area on the Ural and then design the Ural mounts to match. Windshield would probably have to be trimmed to fit around the headlight. But that's a simple band saw operation.

I saw an HD windshield on a Ural at Ural of NE a few years back. It looked right on the bike. I think it was one of the slightly smaller versions that fit a Sportster or maybe a Dyna. Don't remember how it was mounted. Buit it was a traditional HD shape.

If anyone is interested in taking a crack at this, I can work up some sketches. It's just not high on my priority list right now.

When you see Burt1713's design, you'll understand the benefits of reinventing the wheel. He's a clever guy to devise a mount that's as solidly-mounted as this one is, yet installs and removes in a couple seconds without tools. Also, it requires no permanent modification of the bike. I can't wait for him to commence production, so I can buy some for my other Urals.

Pretty awesome the variety of colors. Thought maybe we'd see somebody ask Heindl to make a Yamal edition for them :)

Looking forward to seeing the quick detach windshield mounts.

Bill,

You are in for a treat when the 2019 arrives. I have 1800 miles on mine and love it! I also want the quick-mount! My fairing has been on backorder for three months but it is now in and will be installed on Monday morning.

From what I can see, it appears that Burt's mount is a 2 point system with a mounting point on each side of the fairing going to a bracket that attaches to the fork top caps. At first I thought he had a 3 mounting point when I looked at his early side view. Looks like an eye on the fair slips over a stud on the front fender. But I don't see that in Chad's photos.

A 3 point system should hold up fine. I'm skeptical about a 2 point system due to the twisting those mounts will see when the bike is at speed from wind force. But I'm not criticizing, just making observations. I'm always interested to see how others create solutions.

What I like about the HD design, and other marques use similar designs with minor tweaks, probably to avoid patent infringement, is that it is a 4-point system and uses the wind force to actually force it into engagement. Friction holds it in place when at rest. Polymer bushings, probably something like Delrin, just about eliminate wear. My HD windshield is 18 years old and just as snug as the day I put it on the bike.

For giggles I took it off the HD yesterday and set it on the Ural. It looks right on the Ural. I thought it might be a bit too wide, but it is not. The side brackets on the shield would have to be modified to work with what I had in mind for Ural mounts.
