Mounting Sportster Mufflers

Post by santareg » Sun Jun 03, 2018 7:10 pm

I found these Harley Sportster Mufflers on C.L. for $25.00. I don't see any normal tabs so does anyone know if there is a simple way to mount them on a 2014 GU? The rear engine cross bolt is out since I have a Mr. Cob Skid plate already mounted to it. Oh, they are chrome not gold.

Never tried to mount those. Here are the ones I use: 65613-97 and 65605-97

They have a welded tab on them with a mounting hole.

OK, thanks Darrell, darn these are Part number 64900212. Might look at them with the thought I could bolt on my own homemade tabs to the welded on mounts for a bolt on the mufflers (bottom photo)?

I mounted Rush Racing Products mufflers with a similar mounting set up on my 2015 Gear Up. I started with a piece of 1 inch angle iron and used a cut off wheel and grinding disc to shape the angle iron to bolt to the muffler and leave a tab which shared the same rear hanger location as the stock mufflers. I can take pictures to show more detail if you need them but you can see the fabricated mounts in this video.

Thanks, but I noticed the ones I was looking at are designed to be both mounted on the right side, the rear exit angle would mean the one I would mount on the left would have the mounting tabs on the outside. I will look for the ones with mounting tabs like Albuquralque used.

Happy one year anniversary on your post! <G>

Did you need adapters to mount these to the stock headers? Been looking at options here.

PS - I've got a set of new Cobra slip ons here that might do the job too. Always liked the sound of those, but would have to drag them down out of the loft to see if the diameter will work.

Yes.....need adapters to go from header outside diameter to muffler inlet inside diameter

I have used two kinds of Sportster mufflers.
One with a small "track" into which you slide the head of a bolt(s) as well as the kind with a tab.
I mounted both to the stock muffler hanger using a homemade bracket from flat steel or angle iron depending on the application.

My latest set-up uses a right side Y pipe into a thick walled piece of old chain link fence pipe and one of the "track" style Sportster mufflers mounted to a custom angle bracket. I have it angled up and slightly out so it ends just under the flat part of the rear dogleg.

I did it, quite simple really.

I made a stainless 2to1 Right side exhaust system with HD Black ceramic muffler. Easy to do.
Get the correct bolts that fit the HD welded-on nut carrier.

The main bracket is simple 3/16 steel about 3.5" wide. I ground it along maybe 1/16" deep, a straight line, and then bent it in 12-ton press. Then I welded the "grind-line" back together.

I also added a rear-most bracket to the fender instead of just having the front 2-bolt area for support. The added back-brace eliminates any twist up/down from vibrations, etc.

Simple rattlecan paint job. OBTW, I have a supply of free mufflers from the HD store. They throw things away in complete sets: mufflers, pipes, heat shields, clamps, nuts & bolts. I got "black" because I like it, but also have various shape chrome muffler sets.

I even put a HD muffler on my "Top-Fuel WoodSplitter" (as someone called it when they saw it! )

Pics attached.

FWIW-
Any muffler bolted on a Harley can be made to bolt on something else. It's just nuts and bolts. Use your imagination, think like a machinist to make something fit where you want it to fit.

Also - the HDs come with great wide stainles clamps, but the 1.5">>1.75" area needs a REAL U-Bolt Muffler clamp. These come in ordinary steel or stainless steel at nearly any auto parts store.

YMMV
